I know I can't have a gun around. I've had too many close calls. At the very least, I know I would obsess over it. In certain states of mind, I would probably have constant intrusive thoughts of using it on myself, even if I weren't overtly suicidal.

Just learn some good self-defense skills. Much safer.

I wish to add that I think you need to work on your self-confidence.

My cousin shot himself in the head and lived many years back. My great cousin just shot and killed himself recently. I think guns and a certain kind of depression are a recipe for disaster. But if you do go forward, definitely get gun training. You can even train and borrow guns at the range before committing to buying your own.

Please don't get a gun. There are plenty of other options which present less danger to you.

If obtaining a firearm presents a problem then that should be a sign that you shouldn't have one.

My husband has his guns locked and the ammo stored in a safe that I don't have the combo to. Even though I have shot before (I was in the military for 22 years), I wouldn't want to now. I'd rather learn some self-defense skills instead. If you're asking yourself if you'd be safe with one it's probably not a good idea.

do you really truly believe a gun would make you safer? unless you know how to use it - and know how to use it confidently under extreme duress - it's not going to protect you. In fact, it's more likely to be used against you. I vote for mace + self-defense classes.

I agree. Not only that. The surprise factor. You're secondary in reacting to your attacker.
He has the advantage. It requieres a lot of practice and good luck.
It's like motorcycles, if you haven't ridden one all your life, don't start now.
