I have ADHD, so my short-term memory sucks unless I take a stimulant... but my pdoc won't prescribe a stimulant anymore because I became manic off Adderall.

When I take a stimulant, my short- and long-term memory are equally as good.

I used to have a very sharp memory, both short term and long term but after Bipolars waves kept crashing upon me my memory has tanked. This grieves me deeply as it impacts my daily and future life dramatically. I can only hope my brain will recover in time.

My memory sucks. I don't know if it is the storing process(I have a short attention span) so it never moves into memory or if it is the recall that is screwed up. I can't remember vacations that we have taken together. Entire movies, simple facts about my friends lives...how many brothers and sisters they have, let alone their names.
Thank goodness I can pull it off at work, many times I don't remember what my clients look like let alone their names.
Hubby will ask me "do you remember....? and it pisses me off at times, when he should know to not ask me that question.

Both are bad. My long term is a little better than my short term. I used to have a pretty excellent memory, it's went down hill the last 10 years. Not sure if it's a natural aging thing.... But I doubt it because my mother who is in her 70's has a much better memory.

I could have written your post I don't know whether it is the illness itself that caused these memory issues or the meds. But I like to believe that it is because the meds, and one day when I got better etc etc I would stop my meds and (hopefully) I would have sharp (well at least a normal) memory again. One day 12PM, one day *self hug*

Lol, shattered sanity. I used to be called a walking jukebox.

My long term memory is good. Once I know something, I know it forever. That's why I still remember when women got the right to vote in Lichtenstein (1975, seriously) - one of those useless facts that will stick with me forever. It was listed in one of those "fact boxes" in one of my secondary school history books.

My short term memory is appalling. If I get distracted for like, 30 seconds, I'll forget what I was talking about. This doesn't just happen occasionally, it happens a lot. I used to be one of those people who could read two chapters for a test just once and then ace the test the following day. Once, in 7th grade, our teacher told us to read like, three different fables in English (I'm Norwegian), and she said (mostly as a joke, I think) that if we wanted to we could memorise one of them and recite it in class. So guess who did that. I read it four or five times, it was like 500 words or something, and I knew it, word for word.

I was hypomanic a lot that year.

Funnily enough, a while back my sister was like, "Hey, since you're the one with the amazing memory, can you remember when those kittens were born?" (It happened over the Christmas break when I was home for a couple of weeks.) I was like, LOL. Then I realised that I DID remember. She wanted to know if it was before or after new year's. I was able to tell her the exact date. Apparently this makes me the one with the superior memory, ha!

If only.

For me I still had a good memory on meds for a while until I got very very unwell. This series of episodes seemed to destroy my brain. The meds of course don't help and it depends which ones you are on and we all react differently to them.

My hope is that if I can remain stable for a good period of time it will give my brain time to recover. I just never had much time between episodes to recover (rapid cycling). The only treatment that definitely effected my brain was ECT. It destroys you short-term memory, and some long term ones as well. Although I did recover from it after a few months.

Sorry you are experiencing this too. :sadhugs: I really hope you can find the cause and bring healing to your beautiful mind.

Home was not a good place to be. Not a safe place to be, so I ran away at 16. I don't remember much before that.
But, I suspect it is just me blocking out bad memories
