I wonder: How many of you diagnosed with bipolar has had their thyroid panel checked? Do you suffer from any thyroid disease? If so, what do you do about it? Also, have you ever taken Lithium?

I take Lithium so I get my blood levels and thyroid checked regularly. One check showed my thyroid to be a bit off so I am on medication for it. Now when I get tested all is well.
Why do you ask?

I always have my thyroid, cholesterol, blood sugar etc checked whenever I start a new med. Like, I'll get my blood tested before I start the med, then get it tested again 2 weeks after the med had been in my system.
My thyroid was fine at the time I was Dx'ed with BP. Now my results indicate probable hyperthyroidism, but I have a strong family history of hyperthyroidism, so I don't think any meds caused it. It sucks A LOT! |

I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I have very little thyroid function left. I take a very high dose of synthroid.
I was on lithium, but I felt so slowed down I couldn't work. I now taker lamictal, sertraline, and Ritalin. It seems to be the magic combo for me after decades of meds only partially working. |

Been diagnosed with bipolar, schizoaffective, borderline, Hystrionic, ocd, ptsd.
Finally after years got my thyroid checked last mont and its extremley low. Turns out my mixed episodes were mostly thyroid related, not bipolar. Im so hopeful that i will finally feel physically better after all these years. Still schizoaffective with bipolar. But the tired is from thyroid and anemia. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk |

I not only have a thyroid problem, I have a pituitary problem as well. But I'm still bipolar. And no, never took lithium - I was too scared of it.

Also, a TSH itself is not enough while thyroid testing. Ultrasound is important. Anti-TPO is important, as well as fT 3 and fT4 and other hormones. Quote:
I suffer from Conginental Hypothyroidism (my thyroid is not developed well originally, it's smaller than it should be, which affects me in many ways), but I also have a variety of other endocrine disorders, such as issues with my adrenal glands and - possible - pituitary gland. I've also been or still I'm hyperthyroid due to medication overdose. Will see next time after doing my tests. I wouldn't personally feel good with, for example, just being labeled with psychiatric disorder, while there are so many issues with how my body works. I believe there shouldn't be a place for psychiatric diagnosis when there is a serious endocrine issue, especially thyroid.
