someone explained to me that anxiety is different from mania because
--anxiety has a fear part that mania doesn't have
--anxiety is not irrational but mania is irrational
--mania comes and goes but a generalized anxiety is constant

is that right?
Thanks for this!

I think anxiety is itself irrational by nature!
For me there is no fear in my mania
General anxiety can definitely come and go

Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand

Fear is different from anxiety. Fear does have a source but anxiety often does not have a specific source. I'm sorry I can't give insight into how anxiety differs from mania, though, or how it manifests during mania.

Anxiety comes and goes and cripples me throughout the day, depressed, mixed,or manic. It can be a part of mania but it is definitely different

Anxiety can be irrational, as Jacky said.
I'm a little perplexed -- do people confuse the two? They're not alike at all.

Though I have GAD (which contains boatloads of irrational anxiety), anxiety pretty much vaporizes with hypo/mania. As does fear. Though I do worry that people will think I'm "on something" when it's intense. Otherwise though.

I confuse anxiety with paranoia. I don't normally talk to people, friends, family, strangers. Like getting me to say hi is difficult. Pdoc and T say I have anxiety all I know is it can be difficult to shop as I feel faint sometimes. Mania I have to much energy but my chest feels tight.

Sometimes it's hard for me to understand where the fine line between mania and anxiety are when it comes to my symptoms and experiences. It often starts as anxiety for me (during mixed mania), but it starts to become borderline paranoia then crosses into true paranoia. At least that's my own personal experience with episodes though. I also get the type of anxiety that people get with GAD: excessive worrying about all kinds of things.

I definitely think anxiety is very different from mania, but maybe not because of the reasons you cite.

Firstly, at least my anxiety is often irrational, it's generalized and sometimes-to-often does not seem to have a cause.

I often don't feel fear of any one thing when I'm anxious.

Although my anxiety is generalized it can get worse or better (fluctuate) through the course of the day, depending on what does and doesn't trigger it.

I personally think that people can confuse anxiety with hypomania (not really mania) because it can make you very fidgety and full of energy and this can be mistaken for the extra energy of hypomania. It can also cause insomnia. I think of it as confusing too much caffeine with hypomania, similar symptoms but entirely different.

The only other thing I'd add, is that when I get hypo/manic my anxiety melts away, which is one reason why I miss so much being hypo.

Anxiety may keep you up at night, but mania takes away the need for sleep. Anxiety makes you cautious of things, mania will throw you into wild situations. When you're anxious, you are aware of your heart beating fast and your breathing becoming laboured, mania makes you too high to notice. Anxiety is very distinct from mania. People aren't often hospitalized for anxiety, but mania is very often a cause for it. Mania shares some symptoms with anxiety but they are almost always accompanied by symptoms not associated with anxiety. At least that's how I understand it.
