So recently I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. They started me in at I depressants that really messed me up. I knew something wasn't right when the side effects and my mood swings were far more severe. Tecently went to a specialist who diagnosed me with bipolar depression and suggested I shouldn't have been on Prozac or Effexor. I'm extremely frustrated and feeling hopeless. I had gotten pretty far into taking the meds and hoping side effects would just go away. Now they took me off of everything. And my mood swings and obsessive thoughts are coming back ten fold. It's inky been a few days since being diagnosed and quitting meds. (Quitting cold turkey was advised by my doc)
Has anyone else gone through something like this?? |

Not quitting cold turkey, but that is always hard. Give yourself lots of space and time to adjust if possible. I'm sorry you are having such a rough go of it and having the wrong diagnosis can be extremely frustrating! Perhaps you should ask for some bipolar specific medication and for the anxiety as that will help with the mood swings. Also it's always hard when you first are diagnosed so keep that in mind. I'm rooting for you! Keep us updated please

Welcome to PC!
Do you have a psychiatrist? You've should've been put on something to stabilize your moods. Hang in there. |

I would like to add another "Welcome to Psych Central." I would also second the expectation that a psychiatrist likely will put you on a mood stabilizer.
All the best.

Thank you! sorry for all the typos and rambling(my head is all over the place lately). The o let thing she prescribed was buspirone "to take the edge off". Until next weeks appointment. I'm trying really hard to hang tight. This is my first time trying medication and trying to get better, it's all very discouraging.

I've been there and it really does suck. I hope you get on the right meds soon.

Welcome to pc friend. Ugh, that is horrible you going cold turkey and going to an episode. Does the pdoc know this? I would make a call and let someone know what is going on. If you have the means seeing a therapist will help greatly too. Start watching your moods and find your triggers. It is a hard road but with the right help things can get better.

Welcome! Yes, as soon as I was dx'd last year they had me WEAN off Cymbalta. I'm really surprised your doctor didn't do that and in the meantime add a mood stabilizer to help you. My pdoc is adding a small dose of Cymbalta back in because my anxiety and OCD is really bad right now. The only caveat was that it had to be the lowest dose and with a mood stabilizer so that hopefully it wouldn't trigger mania. I'm on Lamictal and Gabapentin so hopefully nothing will happen. I wish you much luck! Keep coming back. This group has a wealth of information. Hugs

Thanks for posting this... I'm still taking the antidepressant (Zoloft) that was prescribed to me before being diagnosed BPII a few weeks ago. They are weening me off.. but I've had several scary episodes... both depressed and manic sense I've been this medication. They now have me on a mood stabilizer.. but I'm still in the low dose mode right now. I'm absolutely on edge right now and fearful.... My stomach is in knots, grinding my teeth and wanting to go insane for some reason.

Thank you all. I am very skeptical about even taking the buspirone that I was prescribed. I am dreading this whole thing.

Welcome to PC! I know from my own experience that being diagnosed with bipolar disorder can be quite a shock, and sometimes it takes people a long time to accept the diagnosis. This group is a great resource for those just starting out, as well as longtime members who have been fighting this disease for decades. I hope your association with us is a long and useful one.
