I've recently been informed that I may have been misdiagnosed with bipolar three years ago.

I have recently been diagnosed with a thyroid condition and autoimmune condition that have been documented to produce depression and mixed state-like symptoms... which are my two most common episodes.

Bipolar does run rampant in my family. So they jumped to it first. and I could still have it. But who knows, I may have taken all those psych meds for nothing!

If I don't have to deal with these moods my whole life I'll be over the moon. So will my family. I'll find out soon. Wish me luck? I kind of don't know how to feel. I've only recently come to terms with having bipolar.

keep us posted.
People should always get a physical to rule out medical issues like thyroid conditions before getting a MI diagnosis.

I should know in the next few days.

I have Hashimoto's and I've dealt with depression and anxiety pretty much my whole life. I was finally dx'd BP a year ago. It's definitely a possibility that it's causing some issues with mood but usually it's not extreme. Mine is beyond Hashimoto's. I've also been on Thyroid meds for 22 years and know that even with that, I'm still having issues. Maybe once you've been on Thyroid meds you'll notice a difference. Hugs to you!

I agree with Hashi. I have Hashimoto's and psoriatic arthritis, and while they impact my moods, that's all they do. I still have BP and I am grateful I know what the dx is to treat it.

I will have to admit that having to deal with a couple of serious "physical" illnesses made dealing with pills and treatment for BP easier, so I understand that my experience is different.

Whatever the docs find, I hope it leads to relief and health.

Good luck!

I guess my aunt and granddad had a severe thyroid problem. My aunt thought she had a mood disorder for years and attempted suicide because her thyroid went unchecked and really affected her mood, along with some life events that were very terrible. She's much better with thyroid meds. I kind of hope i have a similar thing.

My Community Psych Nurse thinks my BP1 diagnosis is wrong as he has never seen me massively manic. It's always on the back of my mind but I guess I was showing the signs way back when I was diagnosed 6 years ago. I have had flying moods and raging moods but I haven't had a massive depressive episode in 6 years. But have been manic a lot

Update:

Welp. I'm still bipolar, no autoimmune issue found. I just might have cancer instead... lovely.

There is a mass covering the whole left side of my thyroid. It's an inch in each direction, pretty much. I can't believe I didn't notice it. I should find out what it is before the month is over. I have an outpatient biopsy on the 20th.

The nice news is that all the shaking my hands do that I thought was due to antipsychotics is due to my thyroid irregularity instead, so if they take it out, I should stop shaking so much!
