Are there any other people here who can relate??

I work at our cities hospital. The next is an hour away. For the two times I've been hospitalized (one for psychosis and depression, the other for mania), I opted to go to the hospital further away.

I think it would have been worse to go to the hospital I work at because coworkers would ask why I'm there and... the awkward assumption "oh Cdnstargazer is crazy" and my managers possibly finding out...

Yet the hospital I work at has better and nicer facility /psych unit and better supports.

What do you think?

Research other hospitals. I would not go where you work.
Thanks for this!

I can't tell you what to do but I know that I would have to go to the other hospital if given the choice. I just could not feel comfortable with co-workers if they saw me in my worst state. It would induce too much anxiety, paranoia and even contribute to delusional thinking I'm afraid. But that is my own personal manifestations and this may not apply to you. Having the best care possible and better facilities are very important. It's not an easy decision. (((Hugs)))

I would never go where I work. Or where I know anyone. My classroom aide picked up a second job at the hospital I used to prefer. When I had to be hospitalized later that year i requested to go to another area hospital. That would have been waaaaay too awkward.

I had no choice but to go to the hospital I once worked in and where I still have many friends. It was embarrassing to have them see me in such a bad way, waiting in the "suicide room" and looking like something the dog dug up under the house. But I probably felt more awkward than they did. Thankfully I was transferred to the psych unit in a neighboring town where I knew only one person---a nurse who worked the gero-psych ward---and she visited me on her lunch break. It meant the world to me.

A woman I know from my support group has had to go to the hospital she works at. She said it wasn't as bad as she assumed it would be. Remember, the nurses and staff must practise confidentiality. Those that she has an acquaintanceship excused themselves from tending her. Meanwhile, she has since been out of the hospital. While obviously a nervous situation she says thankfully it has never come baack to bite her in the behind.

Personally I wouldn't go to a hospital where I worked. If at all possible, even for the less than ideal environment, I would choose the other option.
