I can't $h!t.
I'm on clozapine, amoxapine, and lamictal, and all of them have constipation listed as a side effect. I think amoxapine is a big contributor because since I went up to150 mg 3 days ago I haven't pooped at all. I actually don't even feel like I need to. I'm taking miralax every day, drinking lots of water, and increased my fiber intake and nothing has helped. I see my pdoc next week and I'd really like to fix this before then and not need to make an earlier appointment just for this.

Anyone have any advice?

Granola bars?

Those always make me ****.

Or try grapes.

Grapes are even better.

So sorry thats happening as I went through something similar when I was taking too much benedryl for anxiety. Then I had anxiety or not going to the bathroom, and that became a vicious cycle. The big thing is hydration, and making sure you dont jump your fiber intake up all at once. Build your tolerance to fiber slowly, if you get a bunch of gas and gas pains then you went too fast on fiber. Take vitamin C as it brings water back to your digestive tract. I take 1000mg a day of vitamin c, If things get "hard", I increase my vitamin C. I like the Aldis and Kroger brand fiber bars for an afternoon snack. They have a lot though so careful adding them if your gassy.

Prunes. Or prune juice.

I'm surprised you don't feel like you need to. I had some constipation a few months ago and after a couple of days I felt really bloated and uncomfortable. At that point I used either castor oil or milk of magnesia because I couldn't stand it.

Oh yes.

Prune juice!

I can't believe I forgot about that. Eat some granola bars and grapes and drink some prune juice. A LOT of prune juice.

That should really work.

Yes, granola bars and prune juice will definitely make me take a ****.

That, or bad Chinese food. That stuff always does me in...

If you drink prune juice, drink a WHOLE glass... and make sure you have a spare 2 hours. That stuff works within 30 minutes for me. Enjoy!!!

My meds constipate me too. Badly.

I take miralax and 750 mg of docusate daily. I always keep some magnesium citrate in the fridge for when I need a laxative. Most days I eat shredded wheat or oatmeal.

I went through this not having to go for weeks when I was on lithium, the drug. I later mentioned it to my primary care doctor and he said some meds go in and tell your gut to shut down. I still have problems from that to this day, and that was over 20 years ago.

I tend to take an Ex-lax if it goes beyond a couple of days. Otherwise I have to do an enema. Not fun!

Magnesium Citrate works best for me and I've tried it all. Risperdal constipated me so badly I thought the stool would needs to be surgically removed (sorry for the TMI, just want you to know I really do understand your pain). Magnesium Citrate is not only the most effective, but it also provides the most cramp free relief. It's a little bottle of fizzy soda....drink the bottle followed by a large glass of water and within 24 hours max, you will be sorted out for awhile at least. Be sure to stay next to the toilet.

I feel your frustration! Since my pdoc finally changed my meds & listenend to me, i've been in a battle! Im on 125mg of Dothep a day, he increased it to slowly cut out the seroquel (i was on 100-150mg for sleep) now im on 50 mg & have been a mess! Im having trouble sleeping & getting myself into a routine to take my meds at certain times of the day coz im that overtired! Also constipation is a side effect of Dothep but also makes me less hungry thank god! I get the seroquel munchies bad at night! I have just had to end up taking a laxative at bedtime so i can actually regulate myself again, its working out well! But i do understand that frustration of not going for days, i felt like a bloated whale! I hope you find some much needed relief soon!!
