Woke up feeling great, almost euphoric. Hot a wall around 4pm. Laid down for like 3.5 hours. Wasn't necessarily sad, just on twitter, Facebook etc. Came out of bed, still felt pretty sad. Around 8, felt much better. Showered, cleaned, did laundry. Now at 10:00, feeling pretty decent.

Yesterday pretty sad/depressed all day. Felt great starting at like 10pm until 1am when I went to bed.

Whew! Rapid cycling? Mixed episodes?

Any insight or opinion is very appreciated.

Thanks!!! Cathryn

Rapid cycling is four or more episodes within a year. I think changes in mood throughout the day are normal. If they are to the extreme is where you should talk to your pdoc.

That does sounds like a big change in mood over time. It's too rapid to be rapid cycling I don't think that'd be within the span of a day tho.

There is something called ultra rapid cycling, but I don't know much about it. I think it's when your moods fluctuate during the day but I'm not sure. I think you should ask your doctor about your shifting moods throughout the day. See what they say it is. (((Hugs)))

Sound like cyclothymia if it's changing within the same day.

Might be a mixed episode. It's not classical rapid cycling, although you're cycling through moods. Have you been eating regularly? Sometimes blood sugar fluctuations cause mood changes too.

I cycle really quickly, hence my ultra-rapid cycling diagnosis.

I distinguish between moods and cycles by whether the emotion fits reality or is reasonable. When all of a sudden my mood shifts extremely with no trigger or justification, then I figure it's a chemical shift.

Like BastetsMuse said, this happens WAY much when I'm in a mixed episode, sometimes within a day in time frames like what you said.

If I had a day like you described, I would evaluate it based on how intense the changes felt.

Rapid cycling is defined as four or more manic, hypomanic, or depressive episodes in any 12-month period. With rapid cycling, mood swings can quickly go from low to high and back again, and occur over periods of a few days and sometimes even hours. The person feels like he or she is on a roller coaster, with mood and energy changes that are out-of control and disabling. In some individuals, rapid cycling is characterized by severe irritability, anger, impulsivity, and uncontrollable outbursts. While the term “rapid cycling” may make it sound as if the episodes occur in regular cycles, episodes actually often follow a random pattern. Some patients with rapid cycling appear to experience true manic, mild manic, or depressive episodes that last only for a day. If there are four mood episodes within a month, it is called ultra-rapid cycling, and when several mood switches occur within a day, on several days during one week, it is called ultra-ultra-rapid per : Depression and Bipolar Alliance
