My Dad undiagnosed ADHD/Bipolar/Depression. Sisters with teenage rage/suicide attempt, alcohol, drug abuse, fibromyalgia=depression. Cousin an alcoholic and drug use. All have somehow become successful other than my Dad who allowed his life to crumble around him later in life. He was great when I was a kid... if sometimes embarassingly eccentric. I'm on the same damned path.

Bipolar and/or depression: I'm probably dysthymic, my mom's bipolar (previously thought to be MDD), her father was either depressive or bipolar, and his father (my great grandfather) had severe depression that ended in suicide. We actually have several suicides in the family, none of whom I knew, but only one was medically motivated.

There have also been alcohol abuse problems on both sides of the family (grandfather was a closet alcoholic, mom was an alcohol abuser for several years, dad took to heavy drinking as self-medication before he died), which is the reason I don't drink and have no desire to.

My mother and father both suffered from subtle, undiagnosed and unacknowledged psychopathologies. I remember many years ago my father and I were looking at a generations-old photograph of my Ashkenazic ancestors and relatives, from which he picked out half-a-dozen suicides, so something was going on.

Lack of money was the cause of several of my ancestors' suicides. Ashkenazi, too. Pure bred and bat shyt crazy.

I think we have alcoholism, depression (immediate family), schizophrenia or drug abuse. Oh and some mild hoarding behavior. I'm the only one who ended up BP.

Alcoholism, addiction to tobacco, aswell as other drugs. Dementia, Bipolar I, possible schizophrenia, depression, varied anxiety disorders. Thats some I know about, my family has a long history of problems, just here in the Bahamas is a very conservative society so people often don't come forward about these problems and if they do are very secretive about it or write it off. I only started learning about my families history of mental illness after I was hospitalized and diagnosed BP I, did some research and found out some things I didn't know. For example my uncle had some sort of phobia that I do not know about and even had ECT treatments cause it got so bad he couldn't sleep alone. Then I found out that one of my cousins has BP I aswell. I knew about the addiction issues long before my history of MI started though, and some traits of that came to me aswell with my cigarette addiction.

My dad is one of 9 kids and all of them are either alcoholics, or recovering and sober. So I think maybe they were self medicating a MI. My one aunt won't leave the house and pops benzos all day. Her husband has to take care of her because she gets anxiety and shuts down. I haven't even seen her in ages because she's too bad to go to a family party. My dad is a active, functioning alcoholic that pops any pill you hand him. We think he has BP but would rather crawl up a elephants rear than admit it. Sorry I painted a weird picture there... with the elephant. Lol.
