Anyone tried it? I took some today... Just wondering if anyone else has had any experience with it?

Yes , I take it , better than St Johns Wort which I tried , and I consider it better than the antidepressant I was on. My T recommended it , he takes it himself during the winter.

I've been taking it daily for over 9 years. The first dose made me feel normal again after 25 years of some odd health issues. I take 400 mg a day normally, and if I can't sleep, I take more. I've never had any issues with it at all but my husband got an upset stomach with it when he tried it--of course he started with a high dose too.

What exactly do you mean by elevated?

5-htp is used by the brain to produce serotonin which might be why you feel elevated if you mean up as in happier.

Here's a brain function questionaire that shows the emotions and feeling related to various neurotransmitters and the related amino acids:

I have taken this in the past after ingesting serotonin depleting drugs to reduce my coming down feeling. I have never thought to use this as a supplement, silly me. It has been years since I have done this though. I may have to give this a try, some extra happy juice might be what I need during these trying times in my life.

5htp was OK for me. I used 200mgs time-release tablets (probably not necessary, but I thought it'd be easier on my stomach). I took one in the AM and one in the PM. It worked OK. But...now, I'm on the psych drugs, including lamictal (apparently may affect serotonin) and wellbutrin (new research shows some effect on serotonin), so...not so much.

If you're not any serotonin-boosting medications, then it may well be a good idea. My 400mgs/day dosage was OK for me, but then I did a search on the doses used in actual studies (most of which were small and the data quality wasn't great, but...that's true of a lot of psychiatric research...), and they sometimes used 600, 900+ mgs/day. That struck me as kind of intense, but...I guess better 900mgs/day 5HTP than 200mgs/Zoloft, right? Right.

Hope this helps, and I hope you can find something to get you up to 100%.
Thanks for this!

When I said I felt elevated, I meant I felt a positive shift in mood and more energy. Not like hypo. Just a nice lift.

Are you supposed to take this in the morning or at night??? And if you take it at night then will you still get the serotonin effects through the next morning/day??

I have bipolar 2 and take 400 mg in the evening. I've never had any problems with it, although it can upset your stomach.

I read somewhere that taking some form of niacin (niacin, niacinamide, inositol hexanicotinate) with it makes it work better. Your body uses tryptophan to make niacin. If you flood your body with niacin, you spare the tryptophan. The tryptophan can then be used to make serotonin. Something like that, anyway. I now take 3 grams niacinamide daily. I find it to be better for me, long term, than the 5htp was, but that may be because of niacinamide's actions on GABA ((mega doses, over a long time, are supposed to be kinda sorta benzodiazepine-ish)).

Hope this helps.
