I've noticed that anxiety seems to be a common comorbidity with BP.

Do you have an anxiety disorder, like maybe GAD, Social Anxiety Disorder, or OCD? What do you take for your anxiety?

I have GAD and I take Klonopin for it. I used to take Ativan, but in low doses it does nothing for me and higher doses make me feel drunk.

What about you? Do you find non-benzos more useful than benzos?

Nothing. No scripts for any. I used to take Ativan but it's not very effective after several years.

Anxiolytics.

It's psychological even if it's based on psychoticism/psychosis and you should learn to live with it while solving any underlying problems (not anxiety, which is more like circular; you may need meds for those underlying problems).

Edit:
Or at least you shouldn't (have to) rely on them.

Of course the psychological, living-with-it part you don't have to do alone.

Hi. Nice thread. I have GAD. Prozac helps with my GAD. No benzodiazepines here as I'm a recovering addict.

I take klonopin at night for GAD when I'm spinning. I've never tried taking it during the day.

When I was hospitalized a few weeks ago the pdoc I was seeing documented GAD in my chart. This is not a surprise to me.

I have anxiety but they associate it with the bp not a separate dx. My pnurse is surprised I only have one dx.

My other diagnosis is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, an anxiety disorder. I take Clonazepam for it but do have a truckload of techniques that I use to control it without meds. Unfortunately, I still need the meds at this point but hope to one day be able to get off them.

I have GAD, social and specific phobias also. I take Klonopin when it's really bad and take a blood pressure med twice a day which has a little impact on anxiety (Propanalol)

I take my benzos only when in crisis and use other soothing techniques. Maybe these are famous last words but I don't worry about a benzo addiction anymore. I just don't see it happening because I use it sparingly.

I've noticed this too, to the extent that I think very often they go hand in hand.

I've never asked my pdoc, but I'm sure I'd qualify for GAD. I take 1mg of klonopin every morning and get an extra 10 every month to take PRN (I always have some left at the end of the month; I try and take them very judiciously, but there are times when I'm so anxious that I'm just paralyzed and can't get up to do anything).

I also take propranolol PRN. Per pdoc, this helps with the physical manifestations of anxiety, and it has. I get really anxious at work, especially during the first couple of hours before I really settle in and I used to shake. I take propranolol in the morning on workdays and it's helped with this enormously. I forgot to take it once, and had a piece of paper in my hand and realized it was shaking. Then I went to see a patient and realized that my legs were shaking.

Both Klonopin and Propranolol play their different roles and both are very helpful to me. Anxiety truly can totally disable me, so I'm all for throwing whatever is necessary at it.

I know I should try alternative methods to help with it (i.e. meditation, which I tried for a while, but have since let it fall by the wayside...).

I have OCD and it's complete hell. The treatment for OCD is high dose SSRIs... instant mania for me. I basically only have therapy, and even then only when the bipolar is stable enough for that. I'm trying out a new med right now - modafinil - and it's making my OCD even worse. So frustrating!
