Hi everyone...

My name is Carri and I have BP2. I was just diagnosed but I've had issues for as long as I can remember. I was treated for GAD and major depression until about six months ago when a new therapist and doctor took a new look (I had the same dr for almost 20 years and I think she just treated me without really treating me).

My mom was diagnosed BP back when I was about 12 so I have way too much experience with this disease. I've just recently started looking for support outside my husband and a couple of close friends. I'm really hoping this can be a safe place for me to vent, talk, cry, and support others who are going through the same thing I am!

Welcome. This place is very supportive. I am also bipolar 2 and was misdiagnosed for many years. I can relate to your struggle.

There's a lot of support here.

You might also want to check for NAMI ( national alliance on mental illness) and/or DBSA ( depression bipolar support alliance) group in your area.

Hi and welcome to PC lots of wonderful people here. Like you I went misdiagnosed for decades as clinically depressed and anxiety disorder. It wasn't until I read the book "why am I still depressed " that I figured out that I may be bipolar. Talked it over with my doc and BAM a shiny new diagnosis. It scared the crap out of me at first because I thought that everyone would think I was going to turn into an axe murderer. However I finally got on the right meds and my life is 100% better. It's not perfect by a long shot, but it's doable.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! I'm not in the best place right now because we are switching meds and can't find something that works.... hence the reason I went looking for a forum or someplace I could actually talk about it and feel safe.

Hang in there. It takes time to find the right meds and can be very stressful. I hope it falls into place for you soon

Welcome

I hope you enjoy this forum. There are a lot of active, helpful people here!

Sorry to hear about your med situation. I was diagnosed 1 year ago and still haven't found the right combo yet, so I can relate very much, but I am close to finding the right combo. So maybe you'll get lucky like me and find a good combo in the next 6 months. It is possible, but frustrating, though.

Welcome! I hope you find the magic med combo quickly. I was diagnosed in Winter 2015 and I'm only now really finding my footing. Be patient with yourself.

I've been diagnosed (bp1) since 2006 and we are still trying to find the right med combo.

I was just diagnosed in May with BP2 and have already switched my pdoc and therapist. The whole med thing is all trial and error until you find out what works best for you.

I know the feeling. I ended up in the hospital about 2 weeks ago because I had been feeling suicidal for quite some time. Going back to work full time has been one of the hardest things for me.

I swear I should have gone to the hospital a couple of weeks ago but I'm afraid of the repercussions. I remember being young and visiting my mom in the hospital and I don't want that for my son. What do they do? How long do they keep you and what is it like?

You get a bed- private or roommate. Everyday you get fed 3 squares and your meds- even non-psych meds. They take your vitals. You see the psychiatrist- maybe more than one. You go to groups which are various classes from about 9 to 4. And they like you to stay out of your room as much as possible. There are TVs you can watch during free time too. Some places have computers with internet too. Some people get taken down for ECT.

How long they keep you depends on your Pdoc there in the hospital. Sometimes 3 days sometimes 30.

See that's scary to me. I'd rather go on disability and work it out that way.

What's scary exactly?

Disability won't help you if you're suicidal. It's just money. You could try to buy self help bipolar books but I say try the hospital if suicidal. It's the safest bet.

I keep going back to my mom being in the hospital and how scary it was for all of us, and for her too. It was a different time though... about 25 years ago.

You're right... it probably is the safest bet. That's what I was hoping to get from joining this group... confirmation that it's okay. Thank you.

If you feeling the need to do something drastic the hospital is your safest bet. Things have changed in 25 years. also when you visited your mother you were a child and that made so much more frightening.

I did a two week in patient stay when I was in my twenties. It was scary going into the ward and hearing the door lock behind me. After the first day it wasn't so bad. Group and individual therapy sessions, evaluations, meds, vitals checks, and three meals a day. After we had been there a few days we got to go outside for recreation too.

The staff and my fellow patients were for the most part ok. We had some laughs, some tears.

I have not needed to go back, yet. But, I always consider the option open if things get tough. It was certainly easier to start medication inpatient.

Glad you found us here at PC, and welcome.
