So my mom will be working at the hospital that I get my MI treatment from. She will not be working in the psych department. Will she have access to my records? Will she know if I'm IP/PHP/IOP? She knows I have bipolar but has no Idea I've been hospitalized or the whole psychosis part. She knows I take meds go to a dr and therapist but truly feels it's all my husband's fault because we live in poverty. If she will get my records how do I prepare her? A mother shouldn't know her daughter was suicidal or my psychosis. How they blamed my break on my parents visiting. Can I just ask her not to read my file? What do I do. I'm very good at hiding the severity of my illness outside T and pnurse office and I don't need that cover blown.

I'm 99.99% sure it is against the law for her to access your records unless you are under her direct care. Doesn't mean she wouldn't do it, but I'm sure it's a deterrent.

I'm guessing no since she is not a part of your treatment team and you haven't authorized her access to your records. When my mom worked in doctors offices and hospitals she couldn't read random patient charts. Especially if said patient is in another part of the hospital. Even when my grandmother was admitted to the same hospital she worked at and when my sister gave birth at that same hospital, she couldn't read their records. It's against HIPAA regulation for people to access your chart without prior authorization. At least thats my understanding.
Thanks for this!

She wouldn't be involved in my care in any way but she'd know whether I was admitted?

It's against HIPAA policy for her to access your records without your consent. I work in medical records myself and trust me, it wouldn't be in her best interest.

Unless she wants to lose her job, I'm betting you're safe.

Good, I didn't want to have to explain myself.

I worked for a huge medical group in Florida. My daughters pediatrician was part of that group long before I decided to take a job there in billing dept.

In medical billing LOTS of doctors notes and exams I needed to attach to a appeal on a claim denied.

When I was interviewed I was asked if I knew anyone that was patient , yes my daughter. I was advised even though I was her parent I was not allowed to look up her records, had to sign off on that, if a time came up that insurance needed X notes , it would be diverted to another biller. They also had a Lock out feature that had I even wanted to take a peek it would show up in a print out that I had attempted to view something I was not allowed .

HIPPA Laws are in effect for anything medical.

That makes me feel a lot better. I can't subject her to my notes whether she willingly doing it or not.

I wouldn't worry about her getting your records, but if she is working there... people talk, her and her coworkers. if you were to be admitted she might hear through the grape vine that someone with the same last name is in the psych ward. that happened to me when I was in when I was 17. one of my friends mom worked at the same hospital I was at and she found out I was there and where I was. I was in a very small hospital in a small town and my last name is pretty distinctive. but if you have an ambiguous last name and / or the hospital is very large id say you have much less to worry about.

It's a fairly small hospital and my family is the only ones with our last name. So I just have to stay out of the hospital for the next 4 months.

((((MM)))

I'm sorry you can't be open with your mom about this. I doubt she will get curious to read your medical stuff and it doesn't sound legal so hopefully she knows that too and they explain security protocols to her effectively (((more hugs)))
