Has anyone ever been on Nozinan?

TRIGGER

This drug almost killed me. Here is my journey from being an insomniac with good mood control on Lamictal to becoming manic as hell and almost dying. All from a drug interaction. Here's my story. I'm verbose right now because still a bit hypomanic.

I was put on 5 mg of nozinan in 1987. The results were amazing. I was happy and nice and worked hard, had tons of friends, people thought I was clever and funny. They liked me. I was happy. No one thought anything was wrong with me.

In 1994 I moved and got a new pdoc. They had just invented Prozac and he threw all my other meds out the window.
Still on Clonazepam and the 5 mg of nozinan. Diagnosed as dysthymia.

In 2012 (?) they quit making the nozinan 5 mg pill and were only selling larger doses. A 25 mg pill could not be split into 5 pieces so I had to go off nozinan. Depression followed.

In 2013 I finally got diagnosed as BP (and finally believed the doctor enough to take my doggone pills every day) and I was put on Lamictal.

2013 - 2016
Anhedonia and insomnia

December 15, 2016
My doctor prescribed 25 mg of nozinan every night for insomnia. I looked it up, and insomnia is an off label use of the drug. Normal use is for schizophrenia and palliative care. I took a pill that night.

Dec 16
My friend said that I was different somehow and it wasn't good. I felt physically ill and told him I probably had the flu.

Dec 17, etc.
My friend gets more and more concerned. I was not concerned at all.

Dec. 18
I felt like someone had gone in to my brain and flicked the ON button. I could think so so so so well and I was so very clever.

Dec 19 and 20
Friend very very concerned.
By now very hyperactive. Cleaning, sorting, washing, tidying, going through boxes for Christmas stuff and making the boxes clean and neat and tidy. Excited about Christmas (a week ago I wished it was over already). So I told myself it was only the Christmas spirit finally kicking in. Cleaning closets etc. Talking constantly and very fast.

Dec 21
Hair salon appointment. I was planning to fly out to my daughter's for Christmas and my plane left the next morning. I was happy happy. After the appointment I did some window shopping and took the bus to my stop. I walked 2 blocks to the drug store for my prescriptions and 2 blocks home. When I got in the door I physically collapsed. I passed out. When I came to, I lay down on my bed. 2 minutes later I was sick. I thought I had been hit with the Xmas flu that I picked up at the mall.

Dec 22
I felt bad overnight and worse by morning. At 8 am I talked to my daughter and told her I was too sick to come for Xmas.

2pm
I thought I was having a heart attack and phoned 911. The ambulance came and they gave me fluids right away. I got a room in the ER right away. Nurses, lab work, urinalysis, chest xrays, ECG, they tested everything. Thank goodness my friend was there. For awhile I was delirious and my friend had to interpret for me. He knew my BP history and all about my meds. He's wonderful.

6 pm
Lab results are back. I had almost no potassium in my system. The Dr said that if I hadn't come to the hospital when I did, my heart would have stopped and I would have died. Then. Yesterday. I was horrified. I don't want to die. They gave me IV potassium.

10 pm
After a wait to consult with a real psychiatrist, the doctor told me that they believed it was the nozinan that almost killed me.

11 pm home
Still manic but not delirious. Up all night.

Now
Almost normal again. Still a ways to go but able to think again.

That's my story of my really short and deadly roller coaster ride on this medicine. From "normal" to manic delirium to mostly normal in a week.

Has anyone else ever had an opposite reaction to a pill? That pill is used to calm people down. It made me so manic I almost died. In 1989 I had knee surgery and was given demerol. Within 20 minutes I was manic. I cannot take any opioid. In 2013 I had another surgery and was given morphine. Within an hour I was manic, dysphoric, and crying for the nurse to find me a psychiatrist NOW! They took away the morphine and I got better right away.

Does anyone else have reactions to drugs that are "backwards". For example, opiods make me manic.

Hmmm I tried to look that med up on my medical app and nothing came up. What class of drug is it? Very sorry that happened, that's scary. Good thing you're ok! I had a bad reaction to a high dose of trileptal and had double vision and couldn't walk or drive. The pdoc office told me to go to urgent care, where they sent me to the ER AND called my pdoc saying how irresponsible they are for not taking my side effects seriously. Very scary!

It's an ole school analgesic, antiemetic.

Same class as Haldol

It's a hypnotic and also used palliative care.

It's old school but has a larger chance of major side effects of most others back in the time.

I'm glad you got medical attention .

Sorry this happened to you
