Hi, Anyone got any suggestions how to substitute some satisfying method of preventing my self from screaming? This unresistible urge to scream from the bottom of my lungs and stomach, is something I do not want to do. I've been screaming a lot lately. This something I did before I got meds, and now I'm doing it again. It's from frustration. Mostly frustration with various forms of electronics and/or phone reps for same who don't listen, can't understand what I am saying, making me repeat over and over. I don't scream at them! I only scream after the call and when nobody is around! Now I refuse to repeat more than once, and will call back later, hoping to get someone who knows how to give good customer service. So that is an improvement. Now I scream because it's so hard for me to put on or take off my clothes to take a shower, put on a gown at the doctor's, etc. At the doctor's room I didn't scream -- I hurled all my cough drops hard across the room. then I cleaned them up and put them into the trash. Last night I made a sign that says: TODAY IS A SCREAM-FREE DAY, and a picture of my cat, and a message from him asking me to please not scream, because it scares him.

So true!!!! I will get a Scream Pillow.

At my age, jumping up and down, and spinning in circles is not possible. I'd fall down.

InnerZone, thanks for the compliment on my sign and protecting my cat from my screaming.

How old are you? This is what I do when manic to burn off energy and I'm nearly 45.

Hi Moose -- hey you are just a baby!!! LOL! I'm already getting ready for my big birthday party in March -- my 75th! We're going to have a jam session -- me and 10-20 jammers depending on who shows up. Also quite of few friends who are not musicians. One or two special musical players for a small show. It's a hat party, too -- everyone is already planning their special hat -- it should be "an unusual hat, or something you make, or a paper hat, or silly hat." Maybe some people will dance -- I sure won't be jumping up and down and turning in circles...I can't even contra dance anymore!!!!
(I can do swing dancing but my b/f does not like it. He only likes free dancing, the 1960s kind. Blech. So boring to me! I love swing. Can't keep up with the 20-somethings, though. I get kicked by them at big swing dance parties. (And that was 20 years ago anyway that I got kicked.)

Dancing is a great substitute for screaming! I'll check out that alternative -- however my downstairs neighbor does not like me to dance on his ceiling.. But that's okay -- probably I could mostly move my upper body.

I hang up pictures on my wall (usually they are pictures of things I don't particularly like,) and then, when I want to scream, I take 1 of the pictures down off the wall and tear it in to tiny bits

really, really tiny bits

and it is so satisfying

when you're angry at someone, and feel like hurting them, you can pretend that picture is that person and oh.... the relief you get from it!

of course, you could just listen to a bit of quiet riot/ AC/DC really loud, same affect.

(I find thunderstruck works quite well)

I break cheap plates. The shattering sound somehow satisfies the craving for sound destruction.

In DBT they teach stress tolerance techniques. One is to put your face into cold water. This will create an instant calming effect. It's something deep sea divers experience.

This article relates to BORDERLINE PD, but is helpful for anyone who becomes overwhelmed. Have a look at the techniques, try them out and see if they work for you. Good luck.
