I'm reading a book called "Escaping Emotional Entrapment." Two basic premises of the book are, 1. there is a choice about EVERYTHING. He covers every possible situation, unlike most authors/professionals who neglect to say something about, like, if a person is in the middle of a genocide, being held at gunpoint, etc etc etc He says in some situations, a person can make the decision to stand up to the danger, and die! Yeah, yeah, yeah -- there are martyrs. I'm not one.
The second of the author's premises is "I make myself angry" or "I make myself feel guilty when _________" i.e "I make myself," rather than "such and such situation or comment makes me angry, etc." I resent it when somebody says to me, "Make it good day!" or "Make yourself a good day!" What do the rest of you think of all this? |

Why do you resent it? They're wishing you well.

self-help and pop psychology...ok, mental health as a whole...have definite short comings. I don't really have a whole lot to add. I used to have severe anxiety, and a book a counselor recommended to me back in the day took a similar approach, and...nah. not so much.
A lot of psychology and psychiatry seem to have religious, moral elements. Thomas Szasz wrote about this extensively. Just because someone is an "expert" in mental health--which our culture regards as "scientific"--does not mean that their opinion is any more "scientific" (or valid) than, say, a Pentecostal minister's opinions+worldview. |

we have no control over our situation ... but we do have control over our perception of it ...
joyful participation in the sorrows of the world ... we can not change the world ... we can only change ourselves ... |

What's the name of the book? Sounds like a good read.

"Make it a great day, or not, the choice is yours" was the closing statement at the end of every morning announcement, and it still sticks with me.

I googled it and it looks pretty stupid. I feel like this book could make you more depressed than hopeful.

I like it more when someone says morning instead of good morning.
