My pdoc cut me off Ritalin cold turkey as he believes it is worsening, or even causing the mixed state I am in. I have read that there can be serious withdrawals. I was on 60mg a day. Has anyone had experiences with going cold turkey of stimulants like ritalin? What happened? By the way, I am IP so have support.

It shouldn't be a big deal, as the stimulants enter and leave your system every day anyway. The half-life of Ritalin is about 3.5 hours, so it never reaches a steady state plasma concentration in your body; it's constantly going up or down.

In my experience there really isn't any withdrawal to speak of, but you will feel more tired than you're used to. This could last a long time or just never go away, as the stimulant aspect often counteracts the sedation present with some of the other meds you're on. Good luck, I hope it works out well for you.

a benzodiazepine should help simmer down withdrawal.
Thanks for this!

I've never taken a stim but wanted to let you know I'm sorry you must deal with this. I hope it goes as smoothly as possible. Keep us posted on how you are doing as I'm sure many will benefit from your experience. (((Hugs)))

I was on modafinil but went off it quickly when admitted to hospital. The result was sleeping for two days straight, then I was fine. I hope it's an easy transition for you.

Day one and I am very tired and unable to concentrate. My pdoc has allowed me to have some PRN to get my assignments done. He hadnt realsedi had study to do. Then taper off. It is a big relief.

Feeling more able to concentrate with 30mg of Ritalin today. Helps me study which encouraged me. I guess i will be weaning off over about 2 weeks and see how I go. I will try to stick to 30mg for now (I can have up to 40mg a day). I think I was addicted as I craved it so much yesterday and had been over-using it before.
