Anybody ever get fixated on geometric forms? I've dropped everything to pursue spirals. Feeling the muse fill my soul...

Geometry?

Geometry?Geometry?

Geometry?

Geometry?

Well why no pictures? How do you delete this post? Wasn't a good idea anyway I'm thinking...

Dear mossanimal. I loved Geometry in high school!! It makes me feel so good to know that you do, too! Did you try to post some of your pieces? There are some empty small squares in your post, but if I click on them, I get a blank web screen. In high school geometry was one of my best subjects -- I was in love with math in general. The teacher I had was an excellent teacher. But she did not teach us about geometric forms. The other geometry taught her class about them. Every Open House each year, her students displayed beautiful forms they had made with sewing embroidery floss (thread) onto special paper they'd calculated the forms on. I wanted to do that so bad!!!! I still remember how they looked.

Thank you Trey...

And yeah I did try posting pictures and it failed. I admit to being a little elated when posting this... And then forgot about it.

But yeah... Geometry has always been important to me.. both in my past life in evolutionary biology and now in elements of design.

The funny thing is that I was terrible with the actual numerical execution of geometry... But I really get along well with it in terms of intuitive proportion. I recently designed a medieval dagger using Gothic cathedral geometry.. and even made my own tools to do it.. beam compass and dividers.

Anyway... It's strange how my mind makes such an abrupt face this time of year.

I am more of a trigonometry/physics kind of gal, but yes I love this sort of thing, I wish I could see the pictures. I recently purchased magformers for my 2 year old daughter, she loves it too. They are magnetic shapes that you can build stuff with. It is is super difficult to get anything to capture the attention of a toddler for more that 10-15 minutes, she will pay with these for hours, breaking for snacks or water only. coolest thing I have given her yet!

Ha.. I remember those days trying to get the kids attention. Stuff like that was so much better than cheap plastic toys.

My images must be too big I'm guessing. They are all on my Facebook business page.. pretty close to the top.

And maybe my dagger will work:

I don't really get fixated on forms, but I do this thing where I see an angle in a door or a window or a poster or something and I find the midangle and in my mind extend that to infinity. I do it again with another angle until it intersects the original and I can do this over and over again. I don't know if I explained it right but I hope you get the jist of it.

Yeah I don't either really. I usually get more fixated on connections between things. I do like geometry.. especially as it relates to aesthetics. It's amazing how much of what we view as beautiful can often be distilled down to things like symmetry, flowing lines and proportion. Or sometimes intentional violations of those concepts. But I don't usually get fixated on particular shapes. It's just what happened this time.

That is interesting... I wonder why you do this? Does it calm you maybe?

It is good to know I am not the only one that does things like this. I form equations and problems in my mind all the time. To reveal the secrets. I know I am a total weirdo for this, but I feel like wearing a hood helps. The best is when I can create something from these connections. I like to make corsets and to draw the equations, because they look like things to me.

I don't really know why I do it, it definitely doesn't calm me. It's just a thing I guess

Thanks guys. Yeah sort of a story. The original was found in the moat of Castillon castle and dated to 14th century. It is a 'knightly' dagger carried as a side arm for penetrating armor. A colleague of mine discovered that medieval long swords were designed in the same manner as Gothic cathedrals... i.e. using circles, intersecting lines, etc. This method creates naturally beautiful forms.. but also gives one the opportunity to put in hidden messages.. i.e. religious symbols.. mandorlas, vesica pisces, ratios whose numbers signify verses in the bible, musical forms, etc. Nobody had tried this theory out on daggers before.. but when I saw the original I suspected that it was designed this way because it was just too perfect. Most medieval daggers are clunky things. Design like this places a whole new dimension to the meaning of a deadly weapon. To a knight it was likely considered an instrument of God.

I just noticed your thumbnail picture and your quotes. Very cool. Again.. I love this stuff but the actual mathematics elude me. I just like the bigger picture interpretations. I love ideas like string theory and things they are learning from the behavior of subatomic particles. Keep an eye on that work.. it is going to have HUGE implications in the understanding of our world. It will definitely change our understanding of biological adaptation and evolution. I'm on a tangent. Focus. Get back to work.

Excellent! That is so cool! I live off the Potomac River, I would love to find some old indigenous people relics or colonial relics!

Haha, I am enjoying you correspondence. I keep an eye out for all of this stuff, I love ETs too. I am an engineer so I have proper training in a all of this stuff, I have done a lot of extracurricular research on my own. Like i said I live off the Potomac, it is sparsely populated, I have seen some things!

Yeah.. my friends tend to be people who think like this. I can't do small talk. It has to be the universe or nothing. I miss college and grad school when I could be as grandiose as I could.. and not thought of as eccentric and have people make excuses to walk away at social gatherings. And since graduating.. it seems like my entire group of friends have since been diagnosed with ADHD, unipolar depression and stuff like that. I won't be surprised if they find out they are bipolar. I saw some pretty manic **** when in college. Maybe everybody is in some kind of episode at that time of their life. Who knows.

I am what you would call a "super nerd" 100%
I love robots and chemistry. I work in aviation because I just cannot get enough air planes. Gah the beauty of the machines, inside and out. The computers, the flerons, the wiring, the canopy, I just love it all.

Jumping in on your conversation here, but I also like meeting other intellectuals. Like Moss, I miss college and talks of philosophy, the world being our oyster. I studied chemical engineering, what about you?

Welcome to it! My undergrad double E, grad systems. I wish I could recall the class, but I had a professor in my grad school that was a chemical engineer. It was interesting to see how different disciplines of engineering attract different personalities.

Undergrad in biology, MS in Evolution/biodiversity. And I started my doctorate in molecular evolution.. and then had my first manic episode and wild ride for about 10 years. Opportunities lost and gained... now I just need to reign it in so I can succeed with what I'm doing now. Which is also the result of manic decision. :-)
