I'm worried about possible insurance problems.

I take 60mg Latuda as my antipsychotic. I also take 50mg of Seroquel with Lunesta just for sleep. Seroquel doesn't even work as anything else at that dose because it's acting just as an antihistamine.

So far that's never caused any problems with my insurance company. But my psychiatrist says that in about 6 months they will no longer allow more than one "antipsychotic". That has me in a panic. Does anyone else here take two "antipsychotics"? Have you ever had problems with insurance? Have you heard that you will? What should I do to keep the Seroquel? Will I need my (new) pdoc to do anything? What?

I've not run into this but then I've never been on two APs. Doesn't surprise me in the slightest though. I'm not sure how to get around it except have your pdoc write a letter stating one is for sleep, the other is for psychosis. I don't know if that would work. My insurance refused to cover my injection because they won't cover anything that needs to be administered by a nurse. My pdoc tried to fight it but they said no.

Yes, wildflowchild is correct. Your pdoc will have to petition it.

Your pdoc can probably argue that going off either Seroquel or Latuda will destabilize you since you've been on both of them for a while. At least that's what I would ask my pdoc to say.

I guess if you ultimately get denied, could you ask about taking Benadryl in the interim?

I wonder if your insurance requires you to tell them why you're on both. If they ask why, I wouldn't admit that Seroquel is used for sleep because then they'll probably say "go try ambien or something and prove that it doesn't work"

I'm on Latuda as an AP and a small dose of Seroquel for sleep. Never had issues with insurance either now or in the past when I've been on two at the same time. No indication of future problems with it either.

If insurance throws up a roadblock you could send in for patient assistance where you get it for a small fee and sometimes for free. Good luck and best wishes.

I'm on two APs and the only trouble I've ever had with insurance was when I first went on Medicaid, which required prior authorization from the doctor before I could get them both. Otherwise, it's been smooth sailing. I've been on two APs for over three years.

Just a note, you can pay cash or pharmacy discount for the less expensive one, like seroquel or haldol; and keep that out of the insurance company's pile; use your insurance for Latuda or Abilify or whatever. Makes talking to the pharmacist a pain in the rear, or you could transfer the cheap one to a pharmacy that doesn't have any of your insurance information to remove a source of error.

Have you seen the Psych Central Drug Discount card? Go to the Psych Meds board and find the link (it's small) up near the top right of your screen.

Also, most pharmacies have their own med discount programs. And the pharmaceutical companies also provide discounts, or free meds. I was able to get free Seroquel for years through Astra-Zeneca. Look on their website.
