A question to our Canadian participants (not sure if there's many out there?) but wondering if you have any advice to finding/choosing a psychiatrist in Ontario. I know we need a referral from our family doctor but it seems so many are not accepting new patients. Any feedback would be appreciated, thx.

I don't have a psychiatrist at the moment (I get my meds prescribed through a walk-in clinic), but the fastest way I got a psychiatrist was after hospitalization. I've never gone through the "slow" route, aka getting a referral, but it seems like a long wait time.

My initial Rx was from my fam doc but as this has become somewhat out of his scope he referred me to a psych for assessment of meds and therapy. Waited 5 months for this appointment. Turns out this psych doesn't believe in meds (told me to manage myself) and wasn't accepting new patients anyway. Have follow up with fam doc Monday.
Ya I kinda figured hospitalization was a faster route. This is very frustrating. |

My family doc is ok with meds it was the psychiatrist he referred me to that seems not to as he told me to manage myself. Another interesting point I learned Friday as I went to a bipolar drop in group (my own discovery) is the participants said I need a pdoc and a separate therapist as most pdocs in Ontario don't do therapy just Medication reviews. I will keep at it and find a pdoc. Thx for input ![]() |
