thinking about taking for migraine prophylaxis (I get vestibular migraines associated with my cycle that are very debilitating). I believe the dose for migraine - 100mg - is less than the standard dose, so am hoping for less side effects (?)

for those who are/have ever been on topamax, what was your experience? and, if you happen to have ANXIETY and/or MIGRAINE, did it help with either?

thanks

I was taking Topamax for migraine and weight loss. It helped with the former but not the latter. I went off the med that was actually causing the migraines so I didn't need it anymore. I still had the cognitive deficit, though.

thanks for your reply. so it helped your migraines but not weight less? how much did you take? and how did you experience the cognitive deficit? (that's what i'm most afraid of)

hi i take 100mg twice a day it does not stop my migraines entirely but mostly i only have one occassi0nly having said that i actually take it as a mood stabaliser primarily . i have lost a lot of weight taking this medication it totally destroyed my appetite initially .

I went on it to help with migraines but couldn't tolerate more than 25 mg. That 25 mg helped me with sleep when that was a very difficult issue. Now I'm on something that is so strong that there is no way topamax is doing anything but when we tried to taper I couldn't sleep through the night and gave up. I apparently need to do a really slow taper. No weight loss on that tiny dose.

I wound up at a migraine clinic at a major hospital and was put on 500 mg of magnesium which prevents most migraines for me. I have continued to have bad migraines nearly daily in July and August since then so this year my doctor agreed I could double my magnesium and add 100 mcg of B12 during these 2 months and I've only had 1 slight migraine. I'm happier with than needing another med (although I don't know when I'll get off the topamax).

If you take topamax, DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS OR YOU WILL GET KIDNEY STONES. I had two and I made my doctor take me off.

It also slows your thinking and makes you derpy, hence the term Dope-a-max or Stup-amax. At least it did for me.

No fun.

thanks everyone. I did a little more research and I think I will try lamictal instead - supposedly good for vestibular symptoms, and maybe it will help with my anxiety too!
