Often I read about people with bipolar being abusive... but what about the other way around? For almost 2 years I realize that I have experienced gaslighting, projection, emotional, physical and mental abuse. I was always told it was my fault. Now that we've split I have realized it was not always my fault... and that no one deserves abuse.

Now I'm wondering
.. was I just conned onto believing I was seriously mentally ill?

Have you been diagnosed by a professional?
I assume so from your list of conditions and meds

I was diagnosed by professionals. But I never told them about the abuse when it was happening.

And I'm now off all meds and feeling fine. It's been a month. No highs. No lows.

I don't know for sure; yet, I am guessing the abuse exacerbated underlying conditions?

It's great you're away from the abuse and you've felt better for a month.
You are probably not out of the woods yet; time will tell.

I'm encouraging you to stay in touch with your pdoc and therapist for awhile longer. You may want to share about the abuse so they can help you to heal.

I feel many people living with mental challenges are, in fact, abused. Far too often. I am glad you no longer live in an abusive home.

It's possible you got conned into presenting as mentally ill. Or you may have just been a depressing situation.

Biplolar can be cyclical. You've been off meds and feel good. That's great. I would still keep a pdoc on hand for a while, because it may reaccur. Sometimes when we get off meds there is sort of a honey moon phase where everything is wonderful. Then a few months down the line you may get a rebound effect from going off meds. Or you may relapse. Keep an eye on your moods. And good luck

I am so sorry you were in an abusive situation but glad to hear you are out of it. I hope being out of it will provide you with long term stability. I agree with the others to stay in touch with doctors. Wouldn't it be wonderful if you never had an episode again? Our environment can certainly make us unstable. Be safe and I wish you all the best. Being off meds right now is too soon to find out if they help or hinder, as for the label of Bipolar I think it's more about treating the symptoms.

I'm glad you are out of the abusive relationship.

I agree with keeping a pdoc on hand for a while in case you start presenting with symptoms. Good luck.

It definitely helped with depression but the anti manic pills made me feel so flat or dopey/sleepy all the time. So it's hard to tell. But I know I definitely struggle with depression that comes and goes.
