I’m posting this hoping to help
I have emergency anti-psychotics on hand. I can take extra Seroquel (Quetiapine). I also have Olanzapine. I was manic once, and the psychiatrist shot me out of the sky with the Olanzapine. This kept me from having to go to the hospital. I would hate to have to pay a hospital bill. My current psychiatrist says Olanzapine is a fast-acting drug. Do you guys have emergency meds on hand? I highly recommend talking to your doc if you don’t. |

I do have Ativan on hand I can take every 4 hours for anxiety it when I'm
Not sleeping well. Not sleeping provokes mania so I have to be careful.

My pdoc doesn't believe in PRN antipsychotics. I don't know why. Instead, he tells me to take my Klonopin, which is a PRN for me. I still don't/won't take it

I'm really stubborn about antipsychotics, but I might end up asking my pdoc if he can write me for one when I crash hard into depression. I always seem to end up mixed if I'm depressed for more than 6 weeks.

I do have prn Seroquel regular to take if I start to get manic. I also have Ativan, which I have taken for anxiety, severe agitation, or an extra boost to help me sleep. These medications were provided to me by prescription from my psychiatrist as prns. He has informed me how many max I'm allowed to take without having to call him. Often my husband is the person who encourages me to take these prns. If I have taken all of my allowed prns, and still have serious escalation of mood issues, I then call my pdoc. Having these prns has also helped me stay out of the hospital. I agree hospitalizations are expensive, so I try to avoid them whenever possible.
To those interested in prns, please talk to your doctor. I would not take extra medications unless my pdoc allowed it. |

No prn's here, just firm instructions to call in at first sign of trouble. I'd probably abuse any AP or benzo that causes drowsiness/sedation if I were "given permission", even something as OTC as benedryl I'm wary of. OTOH, if I were in trouble they'd either see me quickly or call in a script same-day; so I trust their judgement and instruction.

Currently I now see a PCP ( primary care physician) for my psych needs so no emergency meds as he wouldn't know what to do. The plan is for me to self monitor then call him and he will call the pdoc for this area and try to get me an emergency appointment or at least set up a chat though the computer. Failing that I go to ER. It's not the best of plans but here where I live now there's not much better at this time. They have been trying to hire a second pdoc for the three counties for almost two years now and no takers.

I have Seroquel on hand (which I already take a low dose of) as a PRN for hypo/mania. I haven't had to use it for a couple of years, but in the past, if I took enough, it brought me crashing down, like sucking all of the air out of a crazy-making, out of control balloon.
I strongly suggest, too, having a PRN for episodes. I do believe that, in some cases, it can prevent IP or at least things getting too out of control. I'd talk with one's pdoc first, though, about how much to take, to keep it both safe and effective. |
