Completed my first 5k last night. Was very excited to do that. Note that I didn't start to exercise ever until January. I got in the back, where there were mostly walkers and strollers. I figured I'd start slow. I knew I could jog most of it easy as hard as I've been pushing myself.
Then, I thought I heard my name. No, couldn't be, maybe though. Started looking around. Heard it again. Looked straight ahead again, because I was sure it was yet again coming from there. Oldest stepson, his wife, and the munchkins! Weaved my way over and found out they have been doing this for over 5 years. Awesome! I had race buddies. My loneliness for the race wasn't going to happen. After about 15 minutes, my granddaughter and I left those slow pokes behind and started running as fast as her 3 foot tall body allowed! We ran and walked and she told me all about everything. We would pour it on for a while, because we were "fast pokes" then slow down when she started breathing too fast. We finished the race at a full run, for her and me! They took pictures of everyone crossing the line. I can't wait to find that pic of her in her witch's costume and me just dressed as me. Sure, 55 minutes and change to finish is very slow, but I only wish we'd had 10 miles more. The best night I've had in a very very long time. I post this under bipolar topics because I found this to be an awesome mood boost and because this is where I lurk the most. I thought people here might celebrate with me, and know that great things can happen, when we seek out something new and try by ourselves anyway. I really do want to do more now! They're not cheap though. That one was $40, including shirt. It did benefit the YMCA, which has helped me tremendously, so that was an easy justification.

You are right about the mood boost. I so miss running. I tore my knees up because i approached like anything else - all in. I started in January 2013 and in October of that year I ran a half marathon in 2:08 and change. I ran for over 2 hours non stop. But this is no brag; it's a lesson in pushing too hard. Both knees were ragged inside - meniscus tears, frayed patellas and aggravated arthritis. I had one scoped and the doc showed me the pictures and told me my running career was pretty much over unless I wanted to put him on retainer. This is also something of an answer to the questions I am asked in the diet thread about practically starving myself. That's just how I roll. When I decide I want to weigh less, I cut back drastically. When I decide I want to be a long distance runner, I run long distances. I pay the piper pretty regularly.

I'm persistent. I think I've taken my time getting there though. I try to follow the first rule of yoga, "if it feels bad in any way at all, back out of it or just don't do it." At times, I do push ahead anyway, usually out of anger/frustration/guilt/PTSD kicking in (this one is totally counterintuitive, but works when I get angry about it)/other negative emotions/mania. I do try to recognize when those are happening and back off.
I've got over 9 miles total, counting almost 7 on the elliptical today and the rest walking. I don't hurt or feel bad at all physically. There's still over an hour until yoga and I'm resting a few minutes now. If this paragraph is against rules, please tell and I'll promptly remove it. Without kratom I'd never exercise, because it helps me with my severe neck pain. No pain pills work for me, none ever really did. I'm not saying use kratom or don't, but this tea saved my life, by helping with around level 7 headache constantly of 25 years. There was a positive story about it on CNN this past week. Please check the story out, but don't use kratom on my account. |

Kratom is legal in my state and there is a place in town that sells a lot of it. I have not tried it because my reading indicates it has effects similar to meds I have abused. I am also still licking my wounds from trying another natural about 10 years ago - salvia. I thought it was a euphoric but it is a hallucinogenic that gave me terrifying visions. I definitely don't recommend it (still legal in several states). I have heard a lot of stories like yours about kratom and only a few of people having trouble with it (because they took too much too often which I fear I might do).
