So what is the difference? Does a nurse just refill your meds or listens and decides to lower or raise drug strength?

I was in search for a new psychiatrist that is closer for me and found a practice close to me but the first available was with psychiatric nurses in February.

Psychiatric Nurse practitioners are like pdocs. They do med management like a pdoc would the only difference in my state they can't prescribe benzo's or stimulants.

In my experience it’s been mostly the same as a pdoc. I’ve had an APN for three years and I think sometimes she’s wanted to run med decisions past the psychiatrist in the practice but she still has the power to make decisions.

She left the practice though so I’ll be on the hunt for a new psychiatrist after IOP ends as well.

I see a psychiatric nurse practitioner and she can do everything a pdoc can. When I was first looking for a pdoc, she just happen to look like a good fit. I've stuck with her since. Don't be scared off by the nurse part, they are very knowledgeable.

Good luck!

For me personally - and I do stress this is just my opinion - I would rather poke my eyes out with sticks than see a NP. I have found they don’t have enough knowledge to handle the complexities of someone with multiple medical issues compounded by mental illness.

Agree with Christina above. A psychiatric nurse that prescribes could be master's prepared up to having their doctorate in nursing. Depends on the practitioner. Iv'e worked with some awesome Psychiatric Nurse practitioner's. They can be very knowledgable/have great experience. There are good and not as good, just like everyone else. Can't hurt to check her out/get info/ask questions. good luck
