Has anyone had a genetic test to see which medications would work best for you? I'm considering it because I've had a hard time finding an anti-depressant that works.

Does this testing really work? I mentioned this to my pdoc and he was, like "meh". Never touched the subject again.

I don't think the technology is there yet. The tests can basically give you information about how quickly you metabolize the drugs you do or want to take. That can help with dosage information and supposedly the testing predicts what kind of antidepressant, say, might be more effective. Because effectiveness depends on so may different factors, however, the gene test isn't very good at predictions. It all sounds so much more modern than the old try it out and see approach but I don't think in the end it's really much better, if any at all. Personally I wouldn't bother.

I second Wonderfalls. ^^
My doctor isn't excited about it at all. There are mixed reviews, for sure. ![]() WC

I also have trouble finding an anti-depressant that works without making me manic, so I'll be curious to see if getting the test helps you narrow down what meds are helpful. Good luck! Bipolar depression is a beast for many people and I hope you find relief.
As far as i know you have to pay about $500 out of pocket if you want this test done in Canada.

I had it done. Medicare paid for it. Found out that I don't metabolize a lot of ADs, and maybe three would work. My IP pdoc was grateful because he was about to put me on one that wouldn't work.
Also found out I don't metabolize folic acid as well, so I'm now on L-methylfolate. All I can say is that I feel better, so it was worth it to me. |

They did mine but I know nothing about the results. I'll see pdoc tomorrow, so we'll see. They need as many people that can to take the test because the results get more accurate the more people take it. Your own results might change because other people take it. They do keep you and your genetic model on file forever. You sign agreeing to that.

I did one. It's helpful I guess. It did tell me I only absorb half the folic acid I intake so I need a supplement.

I took the test and it helped narrow down the choices for an antidepressant and antipsychotic. I thought it was beneficial for me.

I took it and it cost about $300 I think or was it $350....any way
it showed that I metabolized geodon better than abilify(abilify was not a good med for me.) it also showed that my folate wasn't metabolized and I supplemented it for 3 months with out noticing any improvement so I stopped taking it with my pdocs blessing. (she did the same thing). I think that the addition of zyprexa is really helping me. bizi

Thanks to everyone. It sounds like genetic testing doesn't provide the reliable answers I'm looking for. I appreciate your viewpoints.
