I have mood swings. sometimes my mood changes every few minutes. Yet I rarely show them. I can be really moody yet talk to people calmly and rationally to the point they think I’m just feeling normal.

I don’t know. Maybe I just have very good control over my moods.

According to psycheducation.org, the answer is yes. Also general anxiety disorder (GAD) can also use mood stabilizers.

You can be on "bipolar meds" without being bipolar. Meds are prescribed for several different reasons

Do you have a link to it? My therapist and I have been discussing unipolar mania. So far, I've never experienced depression but I was initially diagnosed as bipolar because of the mania. I don't think unipolar mania is an official thing yet, but I'd like to learn more.

According to the DSM, unipolar mania just = bipolar 1.

I just learned that today when I was researching unipolar mania. Seems counter intuitive as bipolar implies two states or poles. There isn't a lot of information available about what to expect from unipolar mania, but I'm digging through what I can find in case it fits.

My doctor said she's leaning toward 'brief reactive psychosis' for me. She said she'll change her mind if I ever have another episode to give her something more to go on. It basically means something caused me to go nutty once, but nobody can tell me what or why.

Can you be bipolar without being manic?
Yes. To be diagnosed bipolar you only need to experience ONE manic episode in your lifetime. For bipolar 1, it must last at least a week. For bipolar 2, it must last 4 days. Indeed, for bipolar type 1, the entire diagnosis is based on having mania. As long as you've had one episode, you're bipolar 1 (they don't even look at depression).

But I think your question is more along the lines of "I never have manic episodes anymore." I would say that's not that abnormal. The vast majority of bipolar folks spend most their time in either depression or normal moods. Mania is rare for most of us.

So really the key is to know whether you've had at least one true manic episode. Do you think you have at any time? (I am way behind in this thread, so I apologize if this has been answered).

My sleep specialist told me a lot of young women are being diagnosed with bipolar when they actually have narcolepsy. I’m being evaluated for narcolepsy and a few other sleep related issues. Makes sense that I would have a completely different diagnosis considering I don’t meet a lot of the criteria for bipolar anymore.
