Is anyone else triggered by documentaries? Especially disaster documentaries?

I like documentaries but sometimes I get half way through a documentary before I realise there’s a disaster and death and then it’s too late.

Yes, that is too intense for me.

I don’t like the news, either.

I don’t like bad news or the news in general. I also pick and choose with documentaries. Perhaps you could be a little more proactive and find about what the documentary is about BEFORE you watch it. If your TV has an info button, Use that to get an idea of the content before you start watching. If you get to a point where you realize it’s going to upset you, Switch channels or do something else for a while

No, I don't get triggered by them. If anything, they remind me how lucky I am to not be put in such situations.

If someone has a terrible disease, it reminds me that some people have it worse than me and that if they can be positive (despite having a terminal illness, for example), then so can I. And if people are devastated by a death, that reminds me of how devastated people would be if I died.

So I guess they're motivating to me, and they encourage me to help out when someone is in need. For example, Hurricane Katrina. When I saw the disaster and deaths, it really made me want to help out in any way I could, so I donated money to their cause. Did the same for the Boston Marathon bombings.

It's all about perspective.

Sorry you get triggered, though. I agree with Shazerac that you can maybe use the "info" button or Google ahead of time to learn more about the documentary.
Thanks for this!

Thanks Shazerac. That’s exactly what my pdoc said yesterday. Particularily as I’m someone who always has a delayed reaction to what I’ve seen.
I’m usually better at avoiding the worst stuff but I think cos I was on the edge of another mood change I didn’t take care.
In addition I make things worse for myself because after watching the documentary I then google more info, images, video.

I think the problem is that I just focus on the death and nothing else.

I like documentaries of all kind. Except for ( kid killers). That screwed me so much I actually ended up in the hospital for a little while. Now I don't watch that kind of true violence.

I love documentaries. I have so many streaming channels that it’s difficult to watch all that I’d like. I guess that if I can ‘look forward’ to watching The Sorrow and the Pity that disaster documentaries aren’t a problem for me.

I have a news addiction. From childhood but the internet makes news so immediately accessible that I get a rush with each new banner.

That’s kinda sick, I know.

You can also check IMDb.com for movie descriptions. If I were you, there are certain channels that I wouldn’t watch. The History Channel, for instance.

I'm extremely careful about what I watch...movies, docs, whatever. That's especially true when I'm feeling depressed and/or severely anxious.

I do the same thing that you mentioned - I google the very stuff that has upset me. It's like some kind of perverse compulsion.

I find that Wikipedia has a lot of plot summaries, so I usually go there first. I don't usually watch shows that try to "hook" my emotions, as they can cause anxiety or racing thoughts.
Thanks for this!
