Today I was at the pharmacy to pick up my Latuda. The pharmacist was helping someone and the tech called me up to the window next to him. I assumed it was because the pharmacist was finishing with the other guy and he’d be walking away. Not so. The lady asked for my name and I gave it to her. I presumed she’d make the transaction without mentioning my medication. I began getting uncomfortable as it was clear the other guy was not done and I’m hearing about his medications. She asks me if this is for the Latuda. I stopped it there and said this is a privacy issue and I’m not comfortable.

I waited until he was done and went back. There’s a sign you have to stand behind for privacy. I’ve never in my life done a pharmacy transaction side by side with another person.

I discussed it with the tech and pharmacist. The pharmacist said they routinely call people up and if you have a problem with it, just wait. This was the junior pharmacist, not the head guy, but he’s a licensed pharmacist. Am I crazy here? I think this is a major privacy violation. I did point out that this is not like an antacid or blood pressure medication. Very different situation.

I intend to discuss it with the head pharmacist next time I see him. Would welcome any thoughts.

They have the stand there for a reason. Why are they violating their own instructions/policy for people to wait behind the stand for privacy?

They are contradicting themselves.
It's a privacy issue.

I hope the head pharmacist will be more insightful and more sincere with you.

Bring it up to the head pharmacist and if they do nothing report it to the medical or pharmacy board in your state as a HIPPA violation.

If you don't want your prescription or diagnosis disclosed the pharmacy should definitely respect that. Like WC and seesaw posted, I encourage you to speak with the head pharmacist.

I also agree about speaking to the head pharmacist. It’s AGAINST THE LAW to discuss your Meds in front of someone else. I think the clerks get so busy that they kind of forget. I decline to say what Meds and ask them to show me the package so I can nod in agreement instead of saying out loud. Actually I don’t really care if someone knows I’m on psych Meds, but I’m a stickler for privacy. It’s my right and chose to exercise it.

The Junior Pharmacists don't know what they're doing.

Nor do many of the techs, it seems. I've had some very frustrating experiences with pharmacy techs.

This is a good suggestion. I live in a booming area, and my pharmacy that has been great for many years is now overrun with people and both registers are always going and a line of 6-10 people is typical!

I have former coworkers that live very close to the pharmacy, too. I would be horrified if they thoughtlessly called out “lithium.” Everyone knows what that is.

UPDATE: I went back to the pharmacy and spoke to the head pharmacist. He was mortified about what happened, assured me it is NOT policy, and that it would never happen again. I knew he would, he is a good guy. I feel better now.

I just had to drop off an Rx for an increase in dose of my Latuda with him. I think I'll make it a practice to only pick up my meds when he's there. He works there full time, shouldn't be hard to do.

I'm so glad you spoke with the head pharmacist. Yeah, I agree...go there when he's present.

When I was overweight, I was waiting for my shot and the guy behind the desk asks me in a very loud voice, how much do you weigh? At least 6 other people heard him.

Oh good grief. I would have said “nine hundred eighty two pounds. Why do you ask?” But then I have a tendency to respond with sarcasm to inappropriate questions. But seriously it’s the doctors job not the pharmacists to take into account weight when prescribing.

All sarcasm aside I think all of with mental illness have that little tiny bit of “less than” and feel obligated to answer questions when asked. In any situation if someone asks you a question, any question, you don’t HAVE to answer. I omit the answer and say “why do you ask.” If it’s a valid question then I answer it. If it’s not then they are the one fluunderimg not me
