I heard back from the job I interviewed for and they offered me the position!!! They offered me an even better position of a permanent substitute teacher in the school. Less hours and more pay, still considered full time though. I’m excited to have finally found a job but I am anxious. For one, I have to pass a physical In which I must lift 50lbs. I am afraid I will not be able to do it because of my back. Although I can lift my son and he’s 43 pounds. So maybe it will be ok.

I am of course also anxious that it will be too stressful. I really lost my confidence last year. That job was so awful. I hope this job will not be as bad. I think as a substitute I will not be required to do a lot of the teaching paperwork like lesson plans and grading and such. This should lessen my stress load. Also, I will actually know what’s happening instead of being lost in a subject I don’t understand. These kids are very very low skills wise. Many are nonverbal. So even teaching something like math is likely to be either life skills math or even lower than that. I can handle that. I’m hoping, anyway.

Please wish me luck with this new endeavor! Most of you know how much I’ve struggled with being unemployed. I am hoping I have found my new niche.

I'm so happy for you Wildflower! This sounds very promising. I did some of my clinicals in a school like that and it was very laid-back and low stress. My stress during that time was that I felt I couldn't give each child enough time (which would be different for the teacher or teacher's assistant) and I didn't know what my supervisor actually wanted of me. I really enjoyed it otherwise. I hope you will too.

When I've had to have my physical state I can lift 50 lbs they never actually had me do it, my dr. just signed off that I was in good health and able to do it. And lifting once you can probably do more than you can if it was repetitive. At the school they'll probably have you do heavier lifts like 50 lbs with 2 people as 50 lb people are a lot different than a 50 lb weight.

when do you start? It would have to be soon I assume.

I'm so happy for you!

Congratulations!

I tried to take on a permanent teacher role for life science (7th graders), and it did not go for me well either. I had to resign after 3 days, or I was going to end up in a psych hospital. How teachers do it for the measly pay, I honestly don't know. I submitted the paperwork to substitute teach this year because I figured it would be less stressful. I've submitted for a lot of clerical jobs, but when you're 40 and have no work history, it just doesn't look good. The little work history I have, the people I knew from grad school, even my advisor, who knows where they are now? And I did part-time work as an undergrad in the library, but I was so young and naive, I didn't think to keep any sort of record of the department, my boss, my co-workers.

If all my paperwork goes through I will start training on August 20th, I’m not sure if I would start right after that because the school does run for 49 weeks of the year but there is a week off at the end of the summer. I just don’t know what week it is.

Thanks so much everyone! Right now I’m waiting to hear back from my former supervisor to see if he will be a reference for me. I didn’t do so well last year so I don’t want to put him down if he’s not going to be positive. If I don’t hear back I do have another former supervisor that agreed to be a reference and I might be able to get an old coworker to be a reference also. So I’m anxious about that too but I’m praying it all works out! And I don’t even pray lol.
