Another celebrity suicide was announced. This time, Anthony Bourdain, the chef and well-known world traveler who introduced viewers to cuisine of all sorts. I remember his love of music, motorcycles, and his family, too.

I have read that suicides often trigger such actions in others. Even suicidal talk can. I don't know if Kate Spade's passing did, but I really want this to stop. Please please don't ever let it encourage you!

This Sunday will mark a full year since my family lost my 24 year old nephew. I can't even begin to describe how much losing him has devastated us.We don't blame him, we blame his illness (he had bipolar disorder). But only if he would have not succumb to it and kept fighting, and allowed us, and his doctor, to help him do so.

I am 99% sure that during this past year he would have recovered or atleast recovered enough to enjoy some or all aspects of life again, and the love of those around him. His passion was photography, and he mastered that art. Every look through his lens showed the beauty of life. The sounds and touch exhibit beauty, too. It is there and won't go away.

Patience is so crucial when going through hard times, as supremely frustrating as it can be. But as they say "Good things come to those who wait."

Hugs to everyone who struggles! Let us be together here for each other and our loved ones, friends, and nature.

There is help. Never hesitate to contact your doctor, family or Suicide Hotline when in great need. Or go to the ER. Please don't be another tragic story.
Hugs from:

Sorry to hear about the loss of your nephew. I can only imagine how much that hurts. It's also sad to hear about Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain.

The hardest part about coping with mental illness is reaching out for help when you need it. A lot of us don't want to do that. We feel guilty and/or hopeless, or in some cases, we're stubborn.

I always say that schools need to do a better job of educating students on mental illness, or at least depression if anything. It's not that we don't understand that we need help, but sometimes we don't know what to do or to whom we should talk to, or we feel we'll be judged harshly and that "it's not worth seeking help."

Schools need to destigmatize mental illness so that people can be more open about their struggles, so that people can get the help and support that they need and deserve. Judgment is our biggest obstacle.

I agree about having schools do more to educate about mental illness. I also think there needs to be more mental health awareness for all adults, too. Though there are such events, they seem to mostly attract people who are currently dealing with such issues, themselves or family. Maybe if companies offered this awareness and education, that would be good, too.

I've heard today. It made me very sad. He was very successful, had many fans, traveled, did things most of us can only dream about, and yet he took his life. Very sad.

This made me very sad. I was a fan and my mom and her husband were big fans. Reminds me of Robin Williams in a way.

My condolences to you, BirdDancer, on the loss of your nephew.

I used to watch Anthony Bourdain when I had cable. What a tragic loss.

Another loss at the hands of mental illness.

So very sad.

I hope anyone here that is thinking about suicide reach out to us or someone. Everyone needs help with life regardless of MI or not.

In addition to fighting the feeling of being triggered I’m finding it hard to catch my breath.
Two deaths I did not see coming.

I am so sorry for the loss of your nephew.
I've lost my aunt and my cousin to suicide, in addition to 5 friends.

The suicide epidemic is out of control.

Anthony Bourdain was such a genuine, no BS person. He is being mourned by the world.

I didn't know this guy but I'm sad for him. Sorry about your nephew. Suicide is a tragedy that needs open Frank conversation and not be whispered about in corners. Suicide is in the top 10 causes of death in USA and woefully underfunded cause people don't want to talk about it. Where are the fundraisers for stop suicide? There's cancer fundraisers every month, where's the ribbons to show solidarity?

There are fundraisers through NAMI, several per year, every year for decades. The NAMI Walk is a major fundraiser. And we do give people the lime-green ribbons to wear (also really nice little metal ribbons to pin to clothing) that represent "stop the stigma". Also, this year we (NAMI) has issued "ribbon" car magnets that say something about stop the stigma. Of course, this stuff is only in the U.S. I don't know if any other countries have similar.

BUT no way is there the public support for mental illness awareness. Nothing like the cancer causes. It's deplorable. Frustrating as hell.

World Suicide Prevention Day is held 10th Sept every Year.

In Australia we’ve always had an ‘R U Ok? Day on the 13th Sept.

In Australia we also have a mental awareness week in Oct.

That being said there’s not enough public support.
