Which one is going to be worse?
Apparently Artane (that I take for akathisia) can also worsen TD. My husband has noticed that in the past couple of days my face looks different. I'm not having the jaw-clenching, pursed-lipped look I've been having. I still have some lip-smacking, but not as bad. I will have to go back to my pnurse, but she'll take me off of Latuda for sure. I'm afraid she'll give me something with worse side effects or complications. I already have problems with high blood sugar, high cholesterol, elevated liver enzymes, and dry mouth. I've been on Lamictal and Depakote, where I was taken off the latter because of my liver. Latuda has been the best for me mood-wise, so this really sucks. Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!! |

What have you tried for akathisia? Two really mild, benign medications help me with it: Gabapentin or Atarax. Both also help with sleep. Oh, sorry, I see that you are on Gabapentin already. Atarax is a strong antihistamine. You do not list the past meds you have tried so I cannot tell. I did not know that antiparkinsonian agents can exacerbate TD.

How frustrating. I was also helped by Latuda, but after one year on it I began to have td signs, so my pdoc stopped the med. I hope something works out; I truly feel for you.

Both akathisia and Tardive Dyskinesia are horrible EPSs, but I would likely rather suffer from akathisia than TD. Though perhaps some people's TD isn't as bad as others', I have seen a woman with severe TD and it is tragic, in my opinion. As rough as akathisia is, it isn't "disfiguring" to the same degree, plus I think akathisia is surely something that can be alleviated easier.
I have had akathisia on Zyprexa, Abilify and Geodon. I developed it right away from the first two. It only started about 5 years into taking Geodon. I happened to take Propranolol (a med they use sometimes for akathisia), but it helped little. I tried Cogentin, but had such severe constipation from it that it was no longer an option. I ended up having to take a benzo for it, which is less than ideal. It helped, but when the benzo wore off I'd have to take more. There was always at least an hour to three when I suffered again. Eventually my psychiatrist did take me off Geodon, but it was a hard and long process. Geodon has terrible withdrawals for some people when taken for many years. I also had to have another antipsychotic (Seroquel XR) doubled in dose because of mood instability. But I'm happy. I like Seroquel XR, and it gives me minimal side effects, even at 600 mg. |
