So next Saturday, the 14th, I have an appointment for a neuropsychological evaluation for the possible additional/new diagnosis of a psychotic disorder, but I don't know if I want to go to it.

My therapist encouraged me to have this evaluation done because she says I've been having mild psychotic symptoms on and off for months. Plus, she's the one who helped set up the evaluation in the first place.

I was fine with the idea of a re-eval, but idk. I have pretty good insight. For example, I had a man's voice talk to me at 3am this morning telling me that "tonight's the night" that I have to say good-bye to everybody, implying that I was going to die by my own hand and needed to tell everyone good-bye. But I did a lot of fact checking and knew it was a hallucination. It was just as fake as the lime green light emanating from my floor on Friday, or as fake as the two voices constantly throwing insults at me. Basically, I'm used to it.

Oddly enough, I *never* get these symptoms when depressed, except once. If manic and euphoric, then yes, I get them. But I don't see the benefit in getting a psychotic disorder diagnosis like schizoaffective, schizophrenia, PD NOS, or whatever. What do I gain from it, besides possible insurance benefits? I'm already on an AP anyways.

We're getting our son re-evaluated and I can give you those reasons.
1. to have a proper name to his symptoms
2. to find better medications for him
3. to have therapy's tailored to his issues
4. Have accommodations if he needs/wants them in college
5. Have vocational rehab help set him up with an understanding job

Hi blue, I suggest that you go through the re-evaluation. One thing I'm hearing very strongly is that you had to do a lot of fact-checking to be sure the voice you heard was a hallucination.

Having to fact-check sounds awfully draining. Is there a possibility that with a re-eval will give your pdoc a better insight as to which med(s) might be more helpful for you?
By the way, Miguel'smom has made excellent points.

I'd do the re-eval just for the confirmation.

Maybe you can discuss with your therapist/pdoc why they think having this additional information is helpful. Would it help with your meds, therapy or other aspects of your treatment plan? Could it help you to know so you can develop insight into your illness? I can understand not wanting to go through it and get a diagnosis if it is not really necessary, but there could be some reasons it is important.

I would encourage you to do the re-evaluation. It might help you find the right meds. Also, you admit you are hearing voices. It sounds like there is some psychosis there.

I hope this would include a re evaluation of your drug regimen since it seems not to be controlling your symptoms well

I would do it. Just as we just re-did my sons heart ECG and found out he still has heart issues when in fact we were told 8 years ago his heart was fine.

Hi Blue,

I just called my primary care doctor’s office and left a message to have her refer me to a psychiatrist that is a MD or PhD for a re-eval. It’s good to get a re-eval every so often.

No, not yet. It's the 14th, so it's this Saturday.

I'm a bit nervous to go because I don't know what they'll find.

Things are getting worse, though, for sure...

I completely agree with you. Sense of humor ...this is not the time to let it shine. Blue has been dealing with a lot of symptoms.

Sometimes people who seem to give advice that is unusual are the people who most need compassion.

blue, please let us know how your appointment went. I'm concerned because you haven't replied to this thread sine the 14th.

Thanks guys

The eval went okay, I guess. I did an inkblot test for some reason, along with interviews and questionnaires. It lasted just under 3 hours.

I don't get the results back until August 4th, so it's a little far out, but I'm interested in seeing what they think about schizoprenia vs BP vs schizoaffective. I think I have some form of schizo, though, as the hallucinations are persistent.

I'm afraid to mention my symptoms to my pdoc because I don't want another med change. This rexulti has reduced the psychosis, and it's the only AP (besides abilify) that doesn't make me sleepy. I need to stay awake for my job and I can't afford yet another sleepy need. But depending on what the outcome of the test is, I won't know what my pdoc is going to say.

I’m glad you went . I hope the results can help you find a good treatment to balanced things out instead of extremes.

Blue,

I’m so proud of you. I know this is scary but you’re doing the right thing to get to the correct diagnoses. I have my appt next month. A PhD doc with great reviews. I’m excited and nervous. Well you hang in there. We have your back.

It must have taken a lot of courage and hope to do the re-eval. Give yourself a big HUG.
