I started therapy after many many years without it around the same time I started taking Zoloft for situational depression (it had been the first time I had been on an antidepressant in over a decade and it's a low dose).
I'm feeling better. But having started the two around the same time, I can't tell whether it has been the therapy (which has been going well) or the med. It's important to me to make the distinction because I want off the zoloft because I think I already take a lot of meds and don't want yet another one. Have any of you had this conundrum? Which modality has ended up being the helpful one: therapy or a new med? Or is it just impossible to tell the difference? |

For me it was both. Therapy helped me talk about my feelings and provided strategies as well as to help recognize when a mood swing was approaching. But, the medicine actually stabilized me. I don't know that I could do this without both.

At this time in my life, finding the best med balance has been most helpful for me.

Heya, could it be that although one is doing more, both are helping? I understand quite well the desire to minimize meds, but don’t sacrifice your current state without an open conversation with your doc. Yes, yes, I know you would discuss it with the professionals, but it had to be said.
Glad you’re feeling better. I hope all things are going well.

I agree. It could be that both are helping. Maybe you could stretch appointments between therapy longer and see how you do or ask your pdoc about lowering your dose of Zoloft and see how you do (unless you take the minimal dosage, but they can always have you taper down on it). I once tapered off something by first taking a lower dose and then a dose every other day, then every 2 days. I can't remember what it was though, just that it was a psych med.
