I have been on a Lexapro/Lamictal/Klonopin mixture since October. My doctor in inpatient warned that I shouldn't be taking Lexapro, but my pdoc when I got out said it was fine.

I have been *relatively* stable since then, able to move out of my parent's place, get a part-time job, hold down a relationship, etc.

However, my pdoc just moved and retired so I had to get a new one. She said it was incredibly dangerous I was taking an antidepressant and tapered me off and then raised my mood stabilizer.

It has been about 4-5 weeks since then and I have almost completely reverted back to how I was before hospitalization. Suicidal thoughts, paranoia, and irritation.

I know that you are supposed to give new medication changes about 6-8 weeks to settle down but I am afraid that I will not make it that long.

Is anyone else on antidepressants? Should I try and find a new pdoc or is she correct about it being dangerous?

I’m on lamictal and just started cipralex. (Only in week 2 right now and feel no effect at this point but likely too early to tell) I was told that with adding the antidepressant it could trigger mania so I’m being monitored closely the first 6 weeks.

Is your new pdoc aware that you’re feeling worse?

I had told her I am feeling bad, but she told me to hold out and just give it 6-8 weeks

I am not at all fond of your pdoc's perspective. For some people an AD doesn't work well for bipolar disorder. For others (me) an AD is helpful.

I'm on Viibryd with a mood stabilizer and it helps me.

I don't understand why pdocs think it's okay to switch something that works just because of an assumption.

Why would she mess with something that was obviously working for you? I was on lexapro for years along with a mood stabilizer (abilify) and did very well on them.

I'm on zoloft with lithium. I absolutely need zoloft or I crash back into depression. I'd I dont take lithium I will go manic. The combination though is golden. When we were trying to find the right meds, I was always on an antidepressant.

The problem is with SSRIs of which I don't know enough to know if your medication falls into this category. Now I could be wrong but I have read a great deal that it is common for a bipolar person to be first misdiagnosed as having Depression and that they be then prescribed an SSRI. What then happens is that the SSRI may go on to trigger a bipolar episode. I myself am just such an example of this.

I'm on Wellbutrin. I just recently got back on it, but I have taken it for extended periods in the past. It definitely helps lessen the depressive phases for me. Sometimes, SSRIs turn me manic though, especially Effexor, which I respond to better moodwise until the mania comes crashing down.

Some people can tolerate a AD.

Antidepressants can cause mania. They almost sent me to happy acres after taking them for about three days. I have known many others this has happened to. Also, the literature has documented that this happens. Some pdocs prescribe them as long as the person is taking mood stabilizers

I'm on a baby dose of Celexa along with my other meds, and I had horrible withdrawal symptoms both times I attempted to go off it. I won't do that again if I can help it at all.
