Recently, I started 2 meds near the same time, Wellbutrin XL and Protonix 20 mg. I had been on Protonix 40 mg for about a month post-ulcer surgery and stopped it thinking I didn't need it any more. Boy, did the gastro-doc chew me out at my last appointment! He said I could take a lesser dose of Protonix but don't think about stopping it any time soon.

Because of feeling down, my pdoc put me on Wellbutrin XL (well, the generic).

I started taking both of these medications at the same time. I take them both in the morning but the Protonix is taken at least 30 minutes before eating and all my morning meds. Lately, I have been getting very blurry vision in the morning, about an hour or two after taking these meds. It's so bad, I can't type very accurately on the computer. I'm thinking the culprit is the Wellbutrin because I took Protonix in a higher dose without this problem, but...when I was on the higher dose Protonix, I was hurting and hurting badly most of the time. I didn't really type on the computer, mostly used an iPad instead.

The crazy thing is this Wellbutrin is extended release, right? By lunchtime, my vision clears up, and I can read/see what I'm typing on the computer just fine.

I have a pdoc appointment coming up next week. I'll bring it up to him then. It is very frustrating to try to type emails in the morning now or to read a book because of this problem.

Which of the 2 is most likely causing this? Any ideas?

From your above account, it sounds like Wellbutrin may be the cause?

I am sorry you must contend with blurry vision.

Thank you, WC. Yeah, I think so too. It's weird though. I took Wellbutrin in the past at a higher dose than this and never had vision problems before. I don't know if it was extended release or not.

It already sucks that I have crappy vision to start with. My vision is a -10 contact lens for each eye. Basically, I can't see well enough to do things without contacts or glasses unless I use very basic color differences and other senses like touch. It runs in my family. My youngest sister has it too, and so does my aunt on my father's side of the family. I am afraid my daughter is following on track with the pattern my vision took as a kid. So it already sucks having crappy vision to start with, and now I can't see well enough to read with half the morning. Argh!

Protonix changes how your meds are processed.

So it’s likely both are part of the problem.

Argh, great! So now I guess I get to consult both doctors. The gastro-doc is super busy being he is so highly rated & he is the go-to doc the surgeons at the nearby hospital consult for stomach/digestive problems. He did say there were other things to try in place of Protonix though he felt that one was best for me for the time being. I'll have to call and leave a message Monday, but his medical assistant sucks. I never get call-backs from her, so I've just started leaving my messages for him at the appointments desk. Strangely, those questions always get answered.

Do you think the hot weather may be adding to the blurred vision? I have been having blurred vision in the heat and high humidity, so has my rheumatologist; we are both prone to migraine and variations thereof.

Just a thought.

Many side effects disappear within 4-6 weeks of starting them.
