I spoke to my mum yesterday and she said that she feels sorry for me and/or feels pity for me. She said that it breaks her heart that I’m so unwell.
I know it’s coming from a well meaning position but I really don’t know how to respond to what she said?

I don't think I'd know what to say either. On some days I sort of feel sorry for myself for having bipolar. But I'm not sure I'd like other people saying they feel sorry for me.
Thanks for this!

When she says it breaks her heart to see you unwell, you can tell her thank you for her thoughts and to assure her that you're doing your best to get well again. And if you are getting better, then let her know that too.

At least that's what I would do.

I agree with bluebicycle. Also, you could thank her for caring, as that is most likely where she is coming from with this. Count yourself lucky that way, as many don't have that support. (Though some who do find them over-protective, and if that is a problem it should be discussed.

Thank you all.
I ended up thanking her for caring and tried to lighten the mood by asking her not to pity me - given my very own pity party.
She really has been nice to me since my bipolar diagnosis.

Nice job!
I am glad to read you have your mom's concern and support.

I'd love to share my dx with my mom, but she cannot keep things private, most unfortunately.

I hope your mom's acceptance and support somehow helps.
