I am currently on no meds because I'm having issues with insurance. I know supplements won't be as effective as actual prescription meds, but are there any that you really like taking? I have type I but have more depressive episodes than I do mania. I have a manic episode maybe once a year, a few mixed episodes every few months, and the rest of the time I am depressed. I also live in Buffalo, so from my psych ward experiences, I know that vitamin D would be useful (it didn't matter what you were in for, they ALWAYS prescribed it because almost everyone is deficient in it in this area lol.) Are there any others that you've found helpful? Mainly for depressive symptoms.

There's a supplement called NAC or N-Acetyl Cysteine that's proven to work for bipolar depression and mild antimanoc properties. There's many double blind placebo controlled studies for this supplement, however it only really works in combo with meds. I would try and get on Medicare or some form of government assisted insurance. There's really no other supplements that are proven to work for bipolar.

Don't qualify for any sort of state insurance. I did just get a new job and after 6 months I can go on insurance through them, but I am stuck for 6 months. And NAC?? I took it years ago for skin-picking, never heard anything about it working for mood stuff. I know nothing will replace meds, just hoping that there are some supplements on there that maybe help. If a supplement can lift my depression by like, 2%, I'd be thrilled lol.

I would try NAC then. It works on glutamate and glutathione just like lithium.

There’s also an OTC lithium oratate supplement. It took the edge off for me before I could get medicated.

My pdoc has me on NAC and omegas (the quality stuff you get at GNC) for depressive symptoms. He also has me on magnesium threonate with calcium and D3 for anxiety if you ever have problems with that. I find these supplements to be helpful.

Good luck finding something that is helpful to you.

I take omegas BTW a good source for Omegas if you are vegan is flaxseed. I am not saying you should be vegan. I'm giving this info in case you're into veganism. I do hope you find something that can help your bipolar.
