Is it possible to take anti-depressants with BP? It seems like they just treat the mania part - and for me the depression is a much bigger problem.

Sure you can. SSRI's are not recommended but many of us take wellbutrin. Also some of the tricyclics can help too. Bipolar depression is much harder to treat than the mania. Hope you feel better soon

SSRI/antipsychotics combinations are very common in bipolar. I've been on various antipsychotic meds with Prozac for a long time now. I really want the mania back, because I wouldn't be so depressed at least. But, the antipsychotics seem to keep the mania away

Yes, taking an anti-d. and a mood stabilizer is common. That's my own experience, anyway (for myself and other people I know).

My boys take webutren with a mood stablizer. I've been on 2 anti-depressants at once plus a mood stablizer.

I've taken ADs with mood stabilizers and they do help.

That's my understanding, and that's how it worked out for me. I took remeron(an AD) and lithium (an MS) for a while and was still beyond struggling. Started wellbutrin a little while back and i can honestly say now i'm not sure i'd be alive without it, it took me out the lowest of lows |

I need a small dose of an SSRI to keep the worst of the depression away. I'm on only 10 mg of Celexa, but I've tried going off of it a couple of times and the results were disastrous. I'm also on a couple of antipsychotics and a mood stabilizer so I'm pretty safe from being pushed into mania by the AD.

The few anti-depressants I've taken never did anything for me. I think bipolar depression is really hard to treat. For me, mania is a bigger problem then depression. My base line is always a little low, but I can deal with that for the most part. Just be open with your pdoc

I can't take ADs even with mood stabilizers. I'm on an AP that's what works.
