I hope you'll try to do both. As for which is more destabilizing, I think it depends on various factors. If you have drug and/or alcohol abuse or addiction issues, I'd definitely recommend staying sober. Definitely!

My personnal experience sobriety is more important
Bty there are several studies that have shown that intermittant sleep deprevation can actually improve mood, temporarily anyways.
I wouldnt suggest it if its a known trigger for you though

For me it's staying sober. I never sleep right if I am depressed, manic, or stable. If I drink it sends me into rapid cycling.

Staying sober may help your sleep. Alcohol can interrupt sleep.
Best wishes with whatever you decide to do.

Both, I think. Though with me, if the sleep goes, mania comes on very shortly.

I am not a drinker (really not, like have maybe had 5 glasses of wine in over 40 years of living), but I'd imagine sobriety is important too. I grew up in a family of non-drinkers; my dad didn't grocery shop, and my mom didn't buy it because my grandfather, her dad and all his siblings and their offspring, was an alcoholic. Then, I married a complete non-drinker. Both of H's parents didn't drink because of the church they attended, either the church creedence didn't believe in drinking or those were the days of dancing in public being shameful. H's parents grew up in the depression era. So I ended up a non-drinker, and I think that is a good thing.

Both, I'm afraid. We don't get to choose.

As an alcoholic I lean more to the side of sobriety but I also learned how to treat my sleep issues on my own so I may be skewed.

Staying sober is very important in maintaining stability, especially if you have an alcohol problem. But sleep is too, so your best bet is to work on both if at all possible.
