The IOP I go to has a number you can call after hours and it'll direct you to either the pdoc or the program director. There have been a few times I've wanted to call and got to the point of typing the number on the phone, but I stopped. I mean, what are they going to do? Tell me to go to the hospital? Talk to me? What are words going to do? What are they possibly going to say that's going to change anything about my situation?

yes, I agree. Talking to someone and hearing a human voice may calm overwhelming emotions. The voice on the other line will be trained to be sure you are safe, and may be able to offer needed resources. But we are here on PC to listen too.

Were here to fully support you but a forum is no substitute for audible interaction. Please remember too that we should never make irreversable decisions when were in an emotional anguished state. Hold on, i know you can do it, but please speak to someone |

My city has a crisis unit and I’m always hesitant to call their phone number, but it’s been helpful. They’re able to connect to my psychiatrist at times when I cannot to them. They decide on a case by case basis whether to send the crisis team and whether to take a client to the hospital. I don’t like needing them, but they do a good job.

They presented him the words: "And this, too, shall pass away." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction! ---"Address before the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society". Abraham Lincoln Online. Milwaukee, Wisconsin. September 30, 1859. |

I still haven't mustered up the strength to call even though I really feel like I need to right now. I obviously need to be honest to get help, but I don't want to wind up in the hospital again if I can avoid it and I don't think I've ever called an emergency line without being hospitalized right after.

Can you go to an emergency room or call your doc?

It is your choice to heed their advice and go IP, that is if they recommend this to you. So going in does not have to be an issue with you. However, with another trained human to talk to, this being honest talk, then your conversation may or may not go that way. This can help nevertheless. You can tell them you do not want to be admitted. JMHO of course.
PS Due to this thread, I have looked up and recorded all 24 hour psych hospitals in my area, and the local and national US crisis line. Thank you for this thread! ![]()

I'm currently in IOP myself. They don't have a number here for us to call. They say to call the national suicide hotline or use the text line. You are lucky. If you need it use it. Suicide is never the answer. Sometimes being impatient is best. I would go back if I felt I need to. Everyone has a different experience in the hospital. Mine was good. I liked the group therapy sessions and visiting with the other patients. A lot of them were my age. My favorite was the art therapy. I painted a ceramic owl bank. I got to take it home with me. We played games and I even won a few prizes. One was an adult coloring book and some colored pencils. I don't know what your experience was like,, but I liked mine. Give it a try. It might not be so bad. Just get help.
