So I'm in a dark spot. Becoming super religious and want to end therapy. I've been in therapy for over 10 years off and on. I should have all the knowledge to deal with myself. But I'd be lying if I didn't say this smell like giving up and giving up can lead to much worse results. It does concern me these maybe red flags to something really bad. I don't feel crappy just numb / hopeless. I don't want to hurt myself but I feel I've used enough resources. H is concerned. with the sudden shift in religion and wanting to end therapy.

Dear Miguel'smom,

I'm so sorry you are in a dark spot. I wish I knew what to say that would throw some light on the situation you describe. It can be difficult to know whether to continue or stop therapy. I don't know about others, but I generally do not make helpful choices when I am in a low mood. Perhaps this is a peculiarity of mine. I do hope that you will find the light you seek so that you can make a decision that will lead to the very best outcome for you. The best choice might be to continue therapy or the best choice might be to stop it. I have no idea which is best. You seem like a very heroic person to me and I am so sorry that I am unable to be helpful. Hopefully others here will prove more helpful to you. I wish you only the very best.

Sincerely yours, Yao Wen
Thanks for this!

I think you recognise the red flags within yourself and your H does too. I'd throw caution to the wind and say stick it out for the time being. If you're entering an episode, now is not the time to be making these types of decisions. Just my opinion.
Thanks for this!

^This^.
Also, there is no timeframe for therapy. Whether or not you *should* have skills isn't really the determinate. You're struggling, and that is reason to continue.

Hope you are feeling better soon. Don't make excuses, take your meds, use your skills, make the most of your therapy and you'll be best situated to come through this sooner than later. Good luck!
Thanks for this!

I think there are red flags including thinking you've used enough resources and ''shoulding'' yourself. In my experience some (many?) providers in this forest irl would tend to speak similar words. I don't think it's helpful to use these concepts on ourselves. I agree with the others who suggest that continuing with therapy is important, especially as you're in a dark place right now. Hugs and respect.

I think she's frustrated I'm in such a dark spot. She doesn't know all the red flags yet. I'm going to talk to her about the comment. I know better then to say should but it's really discouraging to be in therapy so long. H says I should just count 3 years as actually in therapy because the rest of my therapist sucked save this one and WV T.

I agree, if the therapists sucked, it doesn't really qualify as being ''in therapy'' imo

Please have an honest talk with your therapist about quitting. It sounds like you need a new approach to tackling your problems. A skilled therapist will be able to approach things from different angles.

I have had therapists seem frustrated that I am not doing better. It can often feel personal, but it may be they a situationally frustrated and not really blaming you or anything like that. Still, if they are making you feel like that maybe it's worth mentioning? And, as long as you are committed to therapy than there is no reason to feel it's your fault or something. Maybe a different approach would help? I also think with chronic mental illness we are going to go through rough spots, just like any chronic physical problem and that's not your fault.
Thanks for this!
