Does anyone else have a tendency to switch from manic/hypo to depressed or in a mixed state once it starts getting darker out earlier and colder weather begins? If so, what helps you cope?

I love Fall, in fact it is my favorite season, but usually it means that I'm going to fall into a depression shortly after.

Fall used to be my favorite season but now it seems like I’ve gone straight to SAD. I was feeling slightly elevated a few days ago. I have a SAD lamp but I have feeling this is just gonna be a tough winter for me.

The fall and winter are worse for me. I just assumed it was college semester related.

Oh, absolutely. I love the fall, but my brain won't cooperate. With every day as we draw nearer to the time change I am more anxious. I have my fingers crossed for stability come late October, November, and on... but for the past 9 years I have plunged into a depression/dysphoric mania (mixed state) literally the day of the time change. I had zero control over it, all I could do was ask for help.

Last year my pdoc pressed me to purchase a therapy light. I did, and it was useless. I began keeping a mood chart (which I had previously resisted) and found it to be quite helpful. Adjusted some meds. But, yeah- it was still a rough time.

Yes, definitely. I have a tendency towards depressed/mixed in fall and spring. Depression in winter. Summer tends to be the only season that cooperates in general, although I have had depression/hypo in summer. Overcast and rainy skies definitely affect me. Even when I am stable, my mood shifts on days like that. I have no idea why.

I'm on the same page as all of you. I am very concerned with the changes of seasons as of late. This whole BP issue is getting worse and not better. I thought it would lessen with age.

I thought it would, too. It sure didn't for me, though...and I know it doesn't for most people. I'm 57; when I was 48 my BD turned really vicious. For example, I had not had any paranoia before age 48. Suddenly, I did/do.

Maybe if someone with BD lives to be 70+ symptoms decrease? I don't know. I hope so.
