Hi there,
I am unsure about which type I have. I tend to one day decide to cut off all my hair and color it blonde or I get tons of ear piercings within 2 weeks of each other then take them all out after a month or so. I feel that when I do those things I am going through a manic episode, but not sure. I asked my dr. and she just said you have bipolar and I didn't question it any further. Any comments will be so helpful. Thanks!

Outcomes matter more than labels. You're on medications that treat bipolar disorder, so try not to put so much stock in self-definition; I know it might not be easy, though. Good luck working through your issues.

If you want to know, question your psychiatrist further. Asking us does not yield a final answer. It would be wrong for anyone here to speculate based on what you describe. What may be dysfunctional for some may not be so much for another.

Yeah, you really have to ask your pdoc. There's such a wide range of moods and behaviors with bipolar disorder. I believe that eventually the DSM will break BD into more defined disorders.

You could also do some research to get a better understanding of bipolar in general. That might help you feel better.
Thanks for this!

i agree with the other wise and wonderful posters! Do try to ask your Pdoc! i Hope and Pray that things will turn out well for you! i think it is your right to ask! What matters in my opinion is that you're getting the right treatment though! Sending many safe, warm hugs to BOTH you, @gevansd, your Family, your Friends and ALL of your Loved Ones! Keep fighting and keep rocking NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, OK?!

There's definitely a lot of info online, but so much of it is misleading and confusing. Nothing replaces the knowledge and experience of a good psychiatrist.
