How do you deal with anger? Self analysis? Lashing out? (at the smallest, or no ''provocation''? ''meds''? (the latter is not an option for me )? Time out??

My go-to used to be lashing out, but I've been working on it and taking a breathe before acting impulsively. Turns out I can get shyt done when I'm angry.

Oh man without meds that’s a tough one. If I’m angry manic I lay low so I don’t lash out at my loved ones.

Hi Fuzzy. I could say the exact same thing as Crazy Hitch. Meds are the main, laying low the backup. One could look at "laying low" as a timeout or just a way of not allowing the anger to get oneself in trouble in the outside world. We all sometimes need private time to calm down or privately let off steam.

Other tools/methods might be challenging cognitive distortions and mood de-escalation. For the former, we have to ask ourselves questions like "On a scale of 1 to 10, how much anger was/is really worth it given the circumstances?" Or, "Is the pain of this anger really sufficiently fair to others and/or even myself?" As for mood de-escalation, suggestions were mentioned by others above. Shower, hugging pillow, the challenging of cognitive distortions, etc.

I’m also curious how others cope with anger. Trauma therapy has been very hard and anger is a horrible feeling to deal with. For me I guess I accept that I’m angry and recognize it’s a passing emotion. Sometimes imagining it as a color and watching it “bleed through” my mind. That’s something that I learned in DBT.

I take medication for it. I also try to avoid things that make me angry. If I go out and the experience starts enraging me, I leave. I also walk to try to get out the extra energy. Acting on it can make it worse. I also use delivery grocery services. I should use it for meds too but currently don’t.

I never get to find out where my extreme rage gets me.i know i take it home with me. There i can take lorazepam. I do my best suicidal ideation under such rage. I carry the tools of the trade every day just in case.

Gosh, it's a tricky one all right Fuzzy.

I don't get to take strong meds to help with anger either, due to my medical records showing I'm a recovering alcoholic (addict!), so I basically have to process my thoughts & emotions this way: by feeling them then letting them go every time they arise. Use healthy distractions too. And I tell myself positive things and try to understand the triggering event (usually a person in my case) in a more compassionate way. And just keep letting it go. It's ongoing and tiring but in the end things settle back down.
