i was taking cogentin for akathisia (which I get from just about every med). Well, it caused urinary retention. Had to had several straight catheters put in and eventually a foley (which dislodged and caused bloody urine). The foley is out for about a week, but it still sometimes takes me ~15 minutes just to pee.

No one ever told me this could happen.

And I'm scared because my doc said to take it again (one time use) if the muscle spasms get bad enough and I've already woken up twicefrom them.

That sounds awful, Sapien. I'm sorry you have such trouble with a medication that is supposed to help you bear another medication. I, too, had troubles with Cogentin, but in my case it was constipation. It was so bad that I had to stop it. As I also had severe akathisia at the time, my psychiatrist resorted to using what was a second benzo to help relieve my akathisia. That was less than ideal! For one thing, it sucked to be dependent on benzos. For another, the benzo's effects at curbing the akathisia wore off by the mornings, so I had to suffer every morning while waiting for the morning dose to kick in.

I had already been taking a beta blocker (propranolol) that helped my tachycardia, but not the akathisia. The other benzo (Klonopin) did nothing.

I haven't had akathisia for years now, but only because my antipsychotic is Seroquel. Luckily Seroquel has never given me akathisia or hyperprolactinemia.

Wow, sorry you're having that kind of reaction to the Cogentin. Its been my go-too for akathisia for well over a year now without too much trouble. Can't imagine having to face that sort of effect!

Sympathies!

I have urinary retention and take cogentin.I have to push/bear down hard to empty my bladder.I have been on cogentin for almost 2 years to prevent any side effects of haldol.
I also have constipation but that has been a life long ordeal.

I had urinary retention with Visteral almost needed a Cath while IP and started on it, first dose!

Its odd I never had trouble with Cogentin..

Requip is another medication that can help with Akathesia I dont know how similar the medications are but it helps alot of people..

Hope everything clears up quickly

How absolutely horrible! I had urinary retention with an AP...it's scary, as you know. I'm so, so sorry you've had to go through such an ordeal. Thank you for letting us know, Sapien.

@sarahsweets which condition? Akathisia can be kinda similar to TD it's a movement disorder technically (It's when you have a constant urge to move about and can sometimes manifest as hallucinations), but urinary retention means you can't pee even if you have over a liter of liquid in your bladder and can be very dangerous.
