IF I manage to lose any weight at all, it will be 7lbs. max - then I'll just gain that back as soon as I begin eating normally.

Meds have completely ruined my metabolism - and much of my health, because of high bp, high cholesterol, higher glucose. I cannot understand why there isn't something that can be done to keep people on psych meds from gaining weight.

Are you at your ideal weight?
What a cute pic, @Beth! And the blonde pigtails, oh my!!!

It's terrific that you're exercising. That's so important, regardless of what our weight is.
Hello!

No unfortunately Geodon caused me to have heart problems. I like seroquel though. It really helps with my anxiety. I take metformin. Hopefully I don't gain too much. I also take loxapine, which my pdoc said can cause some weight gain.

I was going to talk to him about going off seroquel though and just increasing my loxapine dosage.

I didn’t tell my old pdoc I did this but I stopped taking my AP last year (invega) and lost 30 lbs. I was sick of it but it bit me in the a55 big time. I’m on Geodon now and it appears weight neutral. New pdoc wants me on lithium since I’m still sui but that’s not going to happen. If weight gain is a side effect I’m sure to get it.

Thank you. Honestly, besides the obvious health risks, I don't mind having gained some weight. I just wish it was less than I have gained, and even more, that there were more creative clothes made in plus sizes. I buy mostly handmade clothes, usually hemp and organic cotton, but the styles are limited in plus sizes, and that's a drag.

I just googled loxapine. I've never heard of it before, but it sounds like a good med. Sounds like it makes sense to stop the Seroquel and increase the loxapine.

I'm so sorry about the still sui Random . The med weight gain issue is a misery. I have read something interesting about lithium, though...apparently, because lithium usually causes people to feel very thirsty, some tend to drink sugary drinks (soda, sweetened juice) in excess, which causes weight gain. If that's true, it's different than the typical AP cause of weight gain (that feeling like you're constantly extremely hungry). Maybe something to consider.

That’s interesting. I don’t drink anything with sugar in it so it may be an option after all. Thanks

No I’m not. My starting weight before getting on meds was 110 lbs, I’m 5 ft 4. A year or so after getting on APs and mood stabilizers I gained to the point of weighing 230lbs. Then I came off the APs and lost 100 lbs roughly went down to 130lbs. (Was still on a mood stabilizer) Stayed there for a year then ended up needing to get back on an AP for some symptoms and gained and am at 178 lbs now.

So as far as meds (specifically APs) and hunger go I am a lot more hungry than I usually am without them. Also I crave sugar almost obsessively.

I’m working really hard now to lose what I’ve gained, it’s hard though. I’m eating balanced /healthy, and exercising regularly (treadmill, weights, squats, yoga class, etc) at least 5 days a week and I walk everywhere because I don’t have a car, yet somehow my weight barely budges within a 3-4 lb range.

My goal is to get down to 120 lbs which is more ideal for my height. I’m kind of stuck on what to do though because the meds help me stay stable but I don’t know what to do because I’m not making progress with losing and the cravings sometimes are unbearable.

The APs I’m on are abilify and Thorazine, and the mood stabilizer is Trileptal. I’m on an AD as well but I don’t feel like that one contributes to the weight issues.

Absolutely a drag that plus sizes are blah. On top of that plus sizes petite! Oh what fun! At least petite is much better than it used to be in the 70’s. Gag.

I’m also on Abilify which my pdoc reckons is weight neutral but I’m starting to not believe it.

Oddly enough, it isn't my psych meds that have made me gain a bit of weight (and I'm on Seroquel...which I would have thought would make me gain). It is actually my birth control implant that caused a 10 lb increase. I am not overweight though and will look at it as the benefits of being on the medication outweigh the downsides. I was a bit unhappy with the weight gain, but I've learned to (mostly) accept it. I just don't want to keep gaining and will be ok if I stay at my current weight.

I know that my weight isn't healthy because I can't get on rollercoasters

I mean, you'd think that would inspire me to lose some (given my love for theme parks), but I honestly gave up ages ago

my attitude to weight now is, well it is what it is
