I've taken zzquil twice this week and these last few days I've noticed a weird shift in my moods and overall mental health. I'm just pretty agitated and testy and I ruminate on things more than normal and I just feel weird and different.

I was wondering if this was the zzquil causing the issue. I've been pretty stable before this week. Even applying for work and stuff.

You might want to ask your doctor.

I don’t have bipolar disorder but any kind of sleep aide, even taken on a very rare occasion, makes me either agitated or extremely irritable or puts me in a bad mood next morning.

Yes it makes me feel weird. I only take it when I can’t fall asleep and I am getting stressed that I won’t be able to handle commute in the morning and work day without sleep. But then sometimes I feel I’d rather be sleepy next day than feel like that

I don't know. I wouldn't think so. Isn't it pretty much the same ingredient as benadryl?

If it is one time my pdoc recommended I take benadryl to help me sleep, but benadryl doesn't make me sleepy unfortunately. Few meds do. The only med that truly does is remeron, but that makes me ravenousely hungry!

I gained 14 pounds in 2 weeks from Remeron then I took myself off it without my doctor knowing.

I guess zzquil can cause hunger and weight gain too along with the mental health stuff.

I guess I'll just stick with my melatonin.

Benadaryl can cause agitation. I was IP once over the weekend and they wanted to wait unil the until pdoc was there on Monday to start doing anything dramatic with my meds so they put me on benadryl. I kept getting more and more agitated and finally the nurse realized that it was happening after a dose of bendadrryl. So I spent a lot of time in the shower trying to relax and had bedtime PRNs early. The next day I had a 1:1 to try to keep me calmer. It was great. But now I know that I do not take benadryl.

Yes essentially it’s the same thing, but it still could cause agitation/irritability in some people etc

I feel pretty awful after any sleep aides

Where you on a higher dose? The sedation decreases somewhat but the appetite stimulation decreases a lot with a higher dose. On 45 mg I had little hunger and I don't think I had any on 60 mg. On 15 I was gaining weight like crazy.

Zzzquil and benadryl are both diphenhydramine (which is also in PM versions of ibuprofen/acetaminophen). Makes some people calmer with the sleepiness, makes some people agitated.

I know if I'm being aggressive in the ER to the point I need to be chemically restrained they usually start with a shot of zyprexa, then when that doesn't work (it usually doesn't) another, and if that doesn't work they give me a shot that has diphenhydramine, lorazepam, and haloperidol in it and that usually chills me out some (obviously there's other shyt in there that's doing it's thing, but there's a reason they add the diphenhydramine because typical reaction is sleepiness)

I didn't take any last night. And my moods are fine today. I'm a bit down in the dumps. Or perhaps down in the Trumps. But overall today has been a lot better. I'm not agitated or irritable like I was yesterday. So I'm guessing it really was the zzquil.
