Hi... I have a question: is it true that bipolars don't SI?

I wouldn't say that was true, at least in my case. I have bipolar, and in the midst of my uncontrolled illness, I would self-injure regularly.
I'm curious: Where did you hear that from? |

Hi cat_eyes~
Not true for me. I don't know where you saw or read that. I've had bipolar a looong time, SI began about 8 yrs. later (seemingly independent of my bipolar disorder). Total of "Daily Challenges" = Decades lol (I'm old!) Holmes |

I haven't yet, but the thought is differently there and the feeling is getting stronger to do so. Which in it's self scares the hell out of me. So far it has only been the self-destructive verbal responses.
side note: first time I openly admitted that fact to anyone, including myself |

The question arises because I was told by a pdoc that I probably am bipolar II but when I told my regular pdoc, he told me that bipolars don't SI and I did, so I can't be bipolar.
But of all the disorders I may have, bipolar fits me most, though my regular pdoc doesn't want to give me a definite diagnose. I'm really lost on whatever I may have ![]() ![]() |

I'm bipolar II. I've never si'd, but I've really wanted to. Lots of people have dual dx. If in doubt get yourself a second opinion because you can't start out on the road to recovery without a proper dx and the right meds.

I will certainly try to get a second opinion (in this case would be a third one).
Basically, the treatment I have is the one for a bipolar but with an important exception: I am not taking any mood stabilizer. As I heard, this is really vital for the control of the disease and today I am only relying on an antipsychotic (risperdal) and an antidepressive (lexapro). The only bad thing is that I must take a rather big dose of risperdal everyday (6 mg) and that makes me feel my body all achy. I've also heard that there are important side effects for the risperdal in the long term. Does anybody know anything about this? |

I am only self diagnosed, but I feel all I'm lacking is professional conformation (I know this is important, but when I find myself laughing, then crying a few minutes later, super hyper sometimes, super depressed others...) and I always thought that people with BP where more likely to SI, Like, I just started My Junior (11th grade) year, and there is a girl who has sat behind me in homeroom since freshman (9th grade) year, and she told me the first day of school (I was "hypomanic) that I seem to always be overly crazy happy, and talkative, telling a million different stories at once, smiling laughing, and joking some daays, and then other days I'm very tired, sad, and quiet, and that there's no middle ground for me- just the two extremes. It was so weird to watch this girl describe all the symptoms of BP to me perfectly, I never realized how obvious it can be. Anyway, my point is that because of these crazy high low switches, i always thought people with BP where more likely to SI in attempt to numb the rush of feelings.
